Re: Buenaventura

I know what you mean about "unwieldy Spanish Catholic names." They are a subset of my personal quirk, "obscure medieval saint names." Love them.
Consuelo is especially gorgeous, to my ears. It's the "sway-lo" that gets me every time. :-D
I'm more of a Bernardo fan than Bernardino, but it's a minor quibble.
As for Buenaventura (masculine?), again I'm more drawn to Benvenida, a feminine name. I came across the name in a history book. Benvenida Abravanel was a Spanish (turned Italian) woman of the Renaissance. I fell in love with her name instantly. Do you like it? Given my love for Benvenida, it's too difficult to switch gears and like Buenaventura, especially if it's supposed to be masculine. I have no problem with "gender inappropriate endings" like this. Columba is a favorite Irish boy's name for me. It's just, as I said, my previous love for Benvenida makes the transition harder.

Ooh, Benvenida!
It's lovely. I'm not too fond of how it starts with Ben though. For some reason, I don't like unusual names that abbreviate to common nns. Not that anyone would call a girl Ben, but...maybe it would be a source of teasing?
Heck, if I'm naming my son Buenaventura, it must mean I don't care too much about the prospect of teasing.
And thanks for reminding me of Columba. I love love love it! It went off my long list when I started going to school at Columbia, though.

Vida reminds me of that coked out 70s supermodel. I think. Unless I am totally confusing references or something. Such a shame. I'm like Benvenida more and more. What a wonderful name for a new baby! Maybe it would be acceptable to me as a mn. The more I think about it, the more I like it there.
Maybe later in life Columba will grown on me. But right now, Columbia is just dirty dorm halls, late nights, fried food, etc. Plus all my Columbia friends would make fun of me for using a school-related baby name. Lol.
