Snow and Plum (questions about "filler" middle names)
Hello,
I have some questions about "filler" middle names. We all know that until the mid 90s most girls' middle names were Marie, Ann, Anne and Lynn. Michelle, Nicole, Jane, Jean, June and Joan have also been used quite a bit.
In the 90s most parents were pretty sick of those middle names and used different ones. Now we have new filler middle names (Rose, Grace etc).
1. Which names do you consider to be "filler" middle names ?
2. Which names will be filler middle names soon ?
3. Would you ever use a filler middle name ?
4. If it was tradition to use a filler middle name (let's say Grace is a family name and you wanted to use it but disliked it as a first name) would you still use it as a middle name or would you try to find an alternative ?
5. Do you have a filler middle name ? Do you know why your parents chose it ? Do you like it ?
6. Do most people you know have filler middle names ?
Oh and what do you think of Plum and Snow as middle names ? Virginia Plum ? Emmeline Snow ?

I have a filler middle name and I hate it. I wish I had a name I could be more proud of. My name is Amy Lynn with an ugly very long Polish last name that sounds completely different in English than it does in Polish. My parents had no reason in particular for choosing my middle name, just that it was short and went well with Amy. But people never have to write their full middle names anyway, so the idea that my name had to be short I don't think was well thought out at all. That's the whole problem with it. I feel like they did not think out my name well enough for me to find any meaning or take pride in it. It feels like such a generic combo. I even know another Amy Lynn. I can't help but wonder why they gave me a middle name at all. All I can do is take what pride I can in my first name, although that's taken me a while, and look forward to changing my last name to that of my future husband's. I just know I want to think long and hard before naming my children. A person's name should never be given to take up space.

I wouldn't categorize Joan as fillerish. That's my FN and besides my Granny and my Goddaughter, I have never met another Joan my age (FN or MN).
Anyways, to answer your questions:
1. Which names do you consider to be "filler" middle names ?
Marie, Rose, Ann, Nicole
2. Which names will be filler middle names soon ?
Elizabeth, Brooke, Katherine, Breanne / Brianne
3. Would you ever use a filler middle name ?
No, unless it was a name I just absolutely adored. Still, it's highly unlikely I will use a filler name
4. If it was tradition to use a filler middle name (let's say Grace is a family name and you wanted to use it but disliked it as a first name) would you still use it as a middle name or would you try to find an alternative ?
Find an alternative, Grace is way too overused
5. Do you have a filler middle name ? Do you know why your parents chose it ? Do you like it ?
My MN is Roseann, so I have two filler names put together. My mom named me after my grandmother Rose Ann (FN MN). Joan Adell was her original choice, but she changed it at the last minute. No, I don't like it. I wish I was Joan Adell
6. Do most people you know have filler middle names ?
Yes, most of my friends have the MN Marie or Nicole
I have to say no to Plum and Snow, even as MNs. I used to have a dog named Snow, so that's all I can think of. And Plum is food to me, not a person's name.

1. Mae, Rae, Ann, Nicole, Marie, Lynn, Louise
2. Elizabeth, Joy, Elise, Jade, Faith, Hope, Grace, Belle/Bella
3. NEVER!!!!!
4. No, I would use something else.
5. No, my middle name is Ruth. It was a family name I think, they wanted either Ruth Hannah or Hannah Ruth and they decided on the latter. Hannah is too common. I'd prefer my mother's other idea of Maria (from the Sound of Music).
6. My three best friends have the middle names Maíre, Jade and Louise.
I'm not a fan of either Plum or Snow, but Snow is miles better than Plum. Plum is just ugly is appearance and sound.

1.Rose, Grace, Lynn, Marie, Ann/Anne, Leigh, Jane, May
2.Faith, Fay/Faye, May, Grace (already is), Ava, Hope
3.Possibly, if the combo sounded good enough.
4.If I really didn't like it, I wouldn't use it. Fortunately, my family doesn't really care about these kinds of things.
5.Kind of. My MN is Ann, but it is my mother's name, so while it might sound like filler, it really isn't.
6.Tons.
Plum sounds corny, but Snow might be cool if paired with the right FN. Emmeline Snow sounds off, though.

edited to add about Snow and Plum
I think filler names now or in the near future include Grace, Rose, Belle, Hope, Faith, Elizabeth, Nicole, Taylor, Jordan, Jade, Brianne and Paige. Boys' middle names don't seem to be fillers, except possibly Lee, Wayne and sometimes Michael or Patrick.
I would not use a name simply because it was a filler, because I couldn't think of any other middle name. Nor would I use a name solely because it was a family name. And I definitely would not use a name I didn't like.
As for Snow and Plum, they aren't names to me, just words. Virginia Plum sounds like her sister is Georgia Peach. Emmeline Snow sounds like fabric softener or laundry detergent.

I'm not sure about future filler middle names but I love Plum and Snow so much that I had to comment-I think your combos are absolutely gorgeous! (And very original)
