Question about "unusual" names that celebs use.
After a celebrity uses a name that is unique or unusual (like Sunday, Harlow, Ever, etc.) how do you feel about using it, even if you like it? I know its silly to let a celebrities decision affect your decisions, but could you honestly meet a baby named something like Harlow or Sunday and not think "Oh, they just copied Nicole Kidman"?
Just looking for opinions on this! :)

If I loved a name enough, then sure, I'd go right ahead and use it.
I love a fair amount of unusual names, so those who know me well enough would know that it's just my style and those who don't and are quick to judge...well, that's not really my problem. There'll always be someone who will have something to say about my baby's names, anwyay.
Meeting a baby Harlow, Sunday or Shiloh, sure, I'd associate the name with the celebrity child, just the same as I'd associate Addison with Grey's Anatomy, or Jane with Ms.Austen. I don't see the drama.
As a side-note, I love Sunday, and Shiloh and Harlow are up there but not quite favourites..yet. And I don't see what the fuss is over Apple. It's not *that* bad.

With a few exceptions, anything a celebrity uses is tainted for me. I do like some celebrity kid names (like Suri, Rocco, Carys, and Vivienne) but others are garbage (like Sunday, Honor, Apple, Harlow, Kal-El, Jermajesty, and Zuma Nesta). Everyone has their own taste in names, but celebrities seem to be out of touch with reality.
It all boils down to how much you care about what others think. I think most of us care a little more about what others think than we would admit.
I feel celebrities that don't use unusual names for their children stand out a little more than those that do. It seems most of the time, celebrities try too hard to give their kids "cool" names and it reeks of self-absorbency.

I honestly do not let anyone else's taste affect my own.
I find the way celebs use naming their kids as a publicity stunt rather aggravating. So I'd be unlikely to use the sort of names they use. And I must say, if I suddenly met a little Shiloh or Harlow I'd strongly suspect that at leas they got the idea from the celeb, even if they aren't actually copying.
This is one of those questions that really depends on the sensitivities of the particular parents.
Yes, if you choose a previously uncommon name which has recently been used by a celebrity, there are some people who will assume you were inspired by the celebrity. So the question is, how much would that bother you and how would you deal with it?
Some people have the sort of personality that they can just let others' incorrect assumptions roll off their backs, and are perfectly fine with thinking of humorous or polite ways to correct the impression, such as "We had the idea first!".
Other people would be highly embarrassed and upset to be continually asked the question about whether they were inspired by the celebrity.
You have to make a judgment about your own personality here. If you are the first sort of person, go ahead and still use the name like Sunday or Ever. If you are the second sort of person, it's better to find something else you like. :)

Huh?
Um, aren't you just stating the obvious here? I think the poster seems to understand that everyone's different about it, and so she asks other people what they personally would do and how they personally feel about it for themselves - not whether she should care about their judgment of what she does. A survey, sort of? Not to pick on you here, but I was reading responses to see people's answers to her question too, and this seems totally non sequitur to me.

That's definitely how I would feel, just because many people I know would copy celebrity baby names.
I love Sunday, Harlow (more for a boy though) and Ever (whose child is Ever?) and I also love Sailor (Christie Brinkley used this).
I'm sure some people would say something about the connections though... like if you used Maddox or Suri, because they are uncommon names. If I loved a name I would use it regardless of what others think!

I don't necessarily think people "copy" the celeb names, but I do think they are inspired by them.
For instance, I quite like both Harlow and Sunday, but would never dream of using them because it sounds like you're copying the celeb.

If I liked a name a celeb used I would use it. I wouldn't get mad if they used a name I liked also. I probably would just think they had good taste in names
Yeah, I get so mad when a celebrity uses a name I love! Or when a TV show starts with a main character with that name. I really feel like I can't use it anymore. Some names that have been "ruined" for me:
Ryder
Harlow
Winter
Marissa
Summer
Blair
I heard a rumour that Britney wanted to use Aurora if her second child had been a girl and I was so worried!

Names like Harlow or Maddox or Ava or whatever were names before celebs used them. Sunday... not so much. That's not really even a name.
But most of the names we love we've heard from somewhere else, anyway. Right? So what if some celebuspawn made the name popular. I'd rather have a kid named Harlow than Emily or Jacob....

Well there are plenty of "celebrity" names that I wouldn't touch with a 10ft pole, but there are the occasional ones that spark my interest. Tbh, if I really loved a name, then I'd use it no matter what. People will always draw their own conclusions anyway.

Well, I've liked a name or most of them (Harlow, Shiloh, River to name a few) way before celebrities had their children. It would not stop me from using a name I loved for years just because they used it. People might assume I named them after whoever but it's not true.
I try not to assume they "copied" anyone. If I met a baby Harlow I would think it would remind of the celeb but not named after or copied by them. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when people assumme people named their child after celeb's or celeb kids just because it rises in popularity after.
Sometimes you don't think of a certain name until someone uses it and you start thinking it's nice it's not that you are copying them you might just never heard the name until then.

I don't automatically think 'celebrity' especially if the baby was born BEFORE any celebrity had their baby.
I wouldn't use them anyway. It's an accepted fact that 99% of celebrity baby names are either attention-grabbing devices, or things they made up while trying to be edgy or renegade.
But yes, if I saw a kid named Harlow or Sunday, I would definitely think that they got it from the celebrity. Legit yet unusual names such as Vivienne I would think would be usable within a few years after the kid's birth. Normal names like Max I probably wouldn't pick up on at all.

If a celeb used Minerva I straight wouldn't care. If they used something I loved a little less like maybe Lucretia I might go off it, because when it comes down to it in practicality I am wary of Judging and Datedness. Also it depends on how well-known the celebrity is and the baby's name and stuff. Angelina J I would probably not use it. Omg what if she had used Simon! I could totes see her using Simon.
Pleeeease don't let her use Simon! That's one of my favorites. :(
I don't think there's necessarily a problem with it. There isn't really much difference in first hearing the name or start thinking about a name because you heard it used by a celebrity than hearing it from some other source. The problem is that people would make the connection, and I must say, it's a rather lame one.
I would definitely think it was copied, it's hard not too, especially when the names are not commonly used or have a special meaning for the celebrity.
