3. Do you think its ok to name a child after a book/movie character if its not REALLY obvious, and you were passionate about the book/movie? Hmm, I am named after a book/tv/real-life person and I never liked it much..I always felt like I would have rather had a more personally meaningful namesake.

5. How do you find most of the names you put on your list, or have you just come across them over the years? I've been through internet and book lists and I pick out the ones I like. I get some 'new' or forgotten ones from this board too.

the thing I don't like about themes is being tied to it, and using a name you don't love just to fit the theme. I'd hate to be restricted like that. However, if I loved all the names then I'd consider it, and in the middle name spot it's realy not a big deal, especially fi you don't carry it on for all the kids. It's not as noticeable as in the fn spot.

yeah, if it has meaning to you I say go for it, I plan on using Lucy for a couple of reasons, one of them being after Lucy in Chronicals of Narnia.

I think it's fine to use on a boy now

Some of them I come across and love instantly, others I warm up to over time. Some are names I meet in real life, others are ones I've come across here

Probably around 5 years. When I started my first list, my top names were Bailey and Bennett

Sure. I would ever do it unless the theme was very subtle though. It's a bit tacky.

Absolutely. Naming your child after something you hold to be very special is always a plus.

To me Shiloh is a boys name. Not to mention it's one of my favorite names for a boy. On a girl it looks and is absolutely ridiculous.

Nell a little bit as Helena Bonham Carter just used it and Elle as a nn for Eleanor, my favourite. I've also been considering Austen as a second mn for Lucas after Jane.

It isn't bad but I see nothing good about it. However, I wouldn't blink an eyelid if siblings were Lucy Rose and Emma Lily.

Yes, completely. I've always been drawn to Marlena, despite finding it hideously trashy, as she is a character in my favourite book.

Possibly, yes. We live in a very sad world.

Mainly just as I come across them. I've known the majority of them for a very long time but add and take away as my tastes change. Alexandria had been my favourite for several years and now doesn't even make my top 5.

I've been making lists of names since I was about 10 I think. That is the earliest I can remember but I was always interested in names.

Yes, a little. Not as much as I have ideas but I do enjoy creative writing.

I'm still contemplating Pleasance. I also had to think a little bit to name my two new fish but those names came pretty easily (they're Jack Daniels and Saaphyri Cookiepuss, btw).

1. What names are you thinking of most today? For boys, I often think about Drew, Milo, Jude, and Reece. For girls, I like Erin, Berit, Julia, Sophie, Tierney, Lily, and Molly.

If, by themed, you mean names like Faith, Grace, Joy, and Mercy, then no. If, by themed, you mean names that start with the same letter, then I wouldn't mind it so bad, as long as it doesn't become a "requirement" for future kids.

14- Madison has grown on me. I know one student and the baby sister of another with it. I went to UW-Madison, so it also has personal meaning for me. My mom has said she doesn't like it as a name, so I'd use it as a MN. I also have a cousin with a Madelyn (Maddie), so it would also help prevent confusion
15- Depends on the name. Rose, Lily, Ivy, and other flowers are traditional names. Buck is a common nickname here, but not legal as far as I know. Some could sound like the parents were smoking something, like Toadstool or Cloudy. Stormy also sounds out there, but I've heard of it as a name.

Naming a child AFTER someone, to me anyway, is like wishing all the traits etc of the original person on the child. There is no way in hell I'd wish my [again, theoretical] son a drug addiction and eventual overdose. If I were to name my potential daughter Rose after my great grandmother Rosa, that would mean I'd wish her all the traits of my grandmother: kindness, strength, and all that. Or am I way off in what honoring is all about? In any case, I don't like honoring names, so to answer the question simply... actually, no. There is no simple way to answer this for me. Refer back to my previous tangent about Hillel.

11. Whats the oddest combo (in your opinion) that you've ever liked?Well most of my combos are odd, probably one with Ghazel in it. I always got "what are you crazy" responces whenever I said a combo with Ghazel in it. I still like it, but no longer in the list of names to make combos with.

There are a few that I've had for what seems like ever, then there are others that I thought I'd never get rid of and have recently scratched off my list. There are new ones that I also just added and even some I took off and are now back.

I suspect it is one of those names that will get more trendy on girls, so probably not. I don't like the name anyway.

Sometimes I come to like a name from seeing it in a baby name book. Other times it's people I meet, novels I read, films I see, songs I hear, etc. Or sometimes if I see a name appearing a lot on the boards it begins to grow on me.

1. Thinking of Arabeth/Aribeth today. Wondering what it would mean in Hebrew.

Wow... I'm loving Lorraine and Cleo from your list... I actually... lol this is weird but I've had Shiloh on my first names list, which was around the time the movie with the dog came out... so I found it there rather than Brad and Angelina's baby and was absolutely gutted when they called her it. The only reservations I had about using it before was that essentially I'd be naming a child after a dog.

Edmund. It is one of my absolute favorite names. I have a cousin, though, named Edward that I see all the time, and I think it would be weird to use Edmund.

Old fashioned names more commonly seen in 19th century America... like Ellery, Elliard, Rosella, Sofronia, etc... for use in a story :-)

Of course it's all right!

Definitely. I think it's okay to name your kid after a popular fictional character as well - if you really like that character that much and it's not someone like Cruella de Ville or Hannibal Lecter (think of the poor kid!)

Personally, I think it's just fine now. Though I don't like Shiloh as a name in general, for a boy or girl.

I just woke up, and my brain isn't yet thinking about anything. I tend to think about the names Evey and Ptolemy a lot, though.

Yes. I've often though about using flower middle names for daughters due to the amount of flower names I love.

Within reason, yes. I mean I'd draw the line if your favourite character was a squirrel called Walnut. I love Jane all the more after reading 'Jane Eyre' so that would be a factor should I use it.

I recently met a girl named Fanny.

It was her full name Fanny Rebekah. Her sister is Molly Johanna.
She seemed to be pretty well-adjusted!

Oh what darling names! Fanny and Molly are absolutely great.

I understand people's concerns of using Fanny, but it's such a fabulous name. I'm wondering if people have reservations about the name because they truly think using it will be a detriment to a person's life, or if they shy away from it because everyone else says they should.

I do feel quite strongly about it, and if I had a child today, I'd probably use it. (Although, it would be a tough decision because Frances is fighting with Pearl for dominance. Mental name smackdowns, FTW!)
