I wouldn't say
Frederick
was too old, I know loads around today.
Frederick
and
Freddie
are steadily climbing their way back up the charts in the UK, although it's nowhere to be seen in the US top 100 (2007)

I think most in the US would consider
Frederick
old fashioned since it's so rarely used here these days. I for one adore it though!

Freddie
is much more common in the UK at the moment. I used to hate it, but it's grown on me a lot.
