Celebrity-Inspired Names in the Top 1000
I was astounded by how many names in the top 1000 are there because of their pop culture affiliation. These names aren't chosen with the celebrity as a namesake. Rather, new parents get inspired by celebrities with distinctive names that fit in with the trends.
I'm not including names that are strongly associated with a celebrity, but which were popular or trendy in their own right before the person got famous (i.e. Dakota [Fanning], Britney [Spears]). I also won't use names that are heavily associated with one famous person, but weren't revived because of a specific event (so I do include Truman, which spiked after the movie "Capote" was released, but I don't include [Abraham] Lincoln or Scarlett [O'Hara]).
Let me know what I'm missing and where I'm off base!

Lauryn Hill and Zion
About Lauryn Hill's influence on Zion -- this was quite clearly a case where Ms. Hill's son had a major influence on the name. But it wasn't just reports of his birth -- his mother wrote a song called "To Zion" about him which became a hit. The song describes how she decided not to have an abortion, even though she was unwed, and how now "The joy of my world is in Zion". It was precisely the sort of song that would encourage other parents to use Zion as a name. :)

When a celebrity uses a name, I'm inclined to remove it from my list. I'll be very upset if a popular celebrity uses any of my first names. I really dislike Hollywood/celebrities and would hate for people to think that I named my child because of a celebrity. I suppose if it's an obscure celebrity, I wouldn't mind much.
I've liked Atticus for years, since I was a young child watching the Gregory Peck To Kill a Mockingbird film, and I loved Scout, and how she called her father Atticus. "Hey, Mr. Cunningham. I said, hey, Mr. Cunningham." "Hey Aaaatticus." Of course, later read the book. I prefer it as a middle name, though DH likes it as a fn. I didn't know that celebrities were using Atticus. Crummy celebrities. Though it doesn't bother me to have it in the mn slot.
I also love Giada. I love that it's the Italian form of Jade because I love the name Jade but Giada is softer sounding and reflects my Italian heritage. Now, I probably won't use it since beastly Giada de Laurentis has become so popular AND I'm a foodie. People will make the connection. Most irritating because it is a lovely name.
I like Ava, though I first noticed it because of Reese Witherspoon's daughter. Of course, I couldn't use it, since everyone else probably noticed it too, which the charts are now showing.
I don't connect Jude with Jude Law. I like it because of the Biblical reference and since reading the Hardy novel Jude the Obscure. I also like that it's a form of Judah.
I like Lourdes, which I first noticed because of Madonna's daughter. I wouldn't use it as a first name, but I think it's a lovely mn, so I've kept it on my list even though a celebrity used it.
I don't think of Zion as a celebrity name. I think immediately of the city/Biblical references and had no idea that a celebrity had recently used the name. Actually, still have no idea who Lauryn Hill is, and I'm not wasting my time to look her up... I don't care.

I would think Draven has much more to do with the character in the cult film "The Crow" than with Chester Bennington's child.
And it would be hard to attribute Joaquin's place on the list to Kelly Ripa's child because of its being such a traditional name in the Hispanic community.
Peyton was also definitely on the rise before anyone outside of his hometown had ever heard of Peyton Manning.
And I'd bet Santino has more to do with Santino Quaranta than Santino Rice:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santino_Quaranta
It's also a bit dicey to correlate celebrity babies too much with general name fashions, since of course celebrities are affected by the same general shifts in taste as the rest of us are. So many celebrity baby names are more results rather than causes of a particular trend. There are some, such as Maddox, Kingston, and Bria (from Eddie Murphy's daughter) which do seem to be linked to the birth of such babies. But there are others like Hazel where the name was clearly on the rise several years before the celebrity baby was born. Julia Roberts may have reinforced Hazel's rise a bit, but she didn't start its comeback. And I think the number of people who would even know the middle name of John Edwards' son would be way too tiny for that to have been an influence on the rise of Atticus.
But I think most of your list shows definite influences, and your comment about most parents not deliberately trying to create "namesakes" but just being inspired by publicity given to celebrity names which fit in with fashionable sounds is right on. :)

Good point about Draven. I haven't seen the movie.
I almost included a little note with Joaquin about why I included it. Of course it's a traditional name, it's been in the top 1000 every year since 1944. But, at least in terms of ranking, the name has had a considerable boost since 2003, when Kelly Ripa's son was born. I think it may have come to seem like an acceptable name in non-Hispanic families. I certainly see it used by non-Hispanic posters on naming boards.
Again, good point about Peyton. I had assumed its popularity was much more recent. But its use (before and after Manning was drafted) would indicate that Peyton Manning is not the dominant influence on the name. This is kind of the opposite of what happened with Ashton (totally switched from a girl name to a boy name once Ashton Kutcher got popular).
And Santino Quaranta does sound like a more likely influence than Santino Rice.
Of course, it is difficult to point out when celebrity babies influence naming trends. There is an important distinction between the Hazels and the Maddoxes, which I opted not to really discuss in my initial post. Just from hanging around naming boards, the acceleration of the discussion of Hazel after Julia Roberts gave birth was amazing. Clearly, there was already a trend that was the engine of this discussion (and the reason Julia Roberts chose the name Hazel), but this high profile usage accelerated the discussion.
Atticus...who knows. Many of these associations are based on my history of hearing new names and being intrigued by them. I remember seeing a Vanity Fair spread that discussed John Edwards's son's mn, and I quickly fell in love with the name.
Thanks for your comments, though. As usual, they're right on.

I hadn't noticed Joaquin being used by non-Hispanic families myself. (Is Ms. Ripa's spouse Hispanic?) I just checked my figures for Nebraska, the state where I have breakdowns by ethnicity, and there were 10 boys named Joaquin born in Nebraska in 2007. 8 of them were listed as Hispanic. Of course in a small state like Nebraska it's hard to say how significant 2 non-Hispanic boys out of 10 are. :) But certainly Joaquin Phoenix as well as Ms. Ripa's son could be introducing the name to non-Hispanic parents.
Thanks so much for this discussion. :)
Thanks so much for this discussion. :)
Scarlett! See how popular it's got, almost overnight...
Joaquin (Kelly Ripa's son) - could aslo be for Phoenix
Jett (John Travolta's son or from the Disney TV show "The Famous Jett Jackson") - could also be for Lee
Atticus (mn of John Edwards's son) - could also be for the clothing line or the book character. I'm thinking more the clothing line.
Ava (many celebrities' children) - Ugh.
Nevaeh (that guy from P.O.D.'s daughter) - double, tripple and quadruple ugh.
Angelina (Jolie) - see above.
Elle (from "Legally Blonde") - Could also be for McPherson
Finley (Angie Harmon's daughter) - No, what?? People are using this on girls? *Is sad*
I like
Jude (Law) - like it as a mn
(Seth) Cohen - starting to like it
Mekhi - Ok, I really like this :)
Heath (Ledger) - it's nice, but I wouldn't use it.
Layla (El, a wrestler) - Don't mind. Could also be after the song.
Giselle (Bundchen) - Her name is actually pronounced zhee-ZEL-ee, which I think is prettier than ji-ZEL
Ariel – Love on a boy...
Lola - Don't mind as a nn. For what, I don't know.
Anahi (from "Rebelde") - Love the name, and must admit to a GP for the show :P
Evangeline (from "Lost") - Love the name, not the character.
Lorelei (from "Gilmore Girls") - Like it.
Ireland (Alec Baldwin's daughter) - Like it. And the poor girl...
Charlize (Theron) - Not bad.
Jett (John Travolta's son or from the Disney TV show "The Famous Jett Jackson") - could also be for Lee

Good points about Joaquin Phoenix and the Atticus clothing line. I definitely think that Atticus Finch is one of the reasons (probably the main reason) that people use the name Atticus, but you can't associate the publication of the book with the spike in the name. Same thing for Elle Macpherson and "Layla" the song--those first appearances may be strongly associated with the names, but the names spiked on other occasions.
I think some of those are surely inspired by pop cultute, but some I think not so much or I think of a different pop culture thing that could have inspired it. For example I started hearing of babies named Dawson after Titanic came out.
It's sort of hard to differentiate between Titanic and Dawson's Creek as influences on Dawson because they both premiered at about the same time (the film opened in December 1997, the TV show in January 1998). So they both may have been part of the sharp upswing in the name's use that came about in 1998 and 1999. :)
