Hungarian names
I'm in a continental, tree lined street, romantic cafe' kind of a mood. Hungarian names have always intrigued me. So I went over to the Hungarian name section of BtN and found some of my favorites, and a few new friends. I know some are more "useable" than others. But in their own terms, in a vacuum, what do you think? Combos?
MALE: Balazs, Benedek, Bertalan, Emil, Gaspar, Gusztav, Imre, Istvan, Kalman, Kazimir, Kornel, Laszlo, Lorant, Oszkar, Rikard, Roman, Rudolf, Sandor, Todor, Zsigmond.
FEMALE: Alida, Beata, Brigitta, Edina, Erzsebet, Franciska, Frida, Ilona, Jozefa, Juliska, Katarina, Magdalena, Mara / Mariska, Margareta / Margit, Marta, Rahel, Teodora, Terezia, Valeria, Vida, Vilma, Zsazsa / Zsuzsa, Zsofia.
There were so many I couldn't list them all. Check them out and see if you would add any to my list. Thanks!

You make me want to travel to Hungary. From your list / friends I love:
Jozsef, Eva, Sandor (obviously), Istvan, Jolan, Franciska, Orsolya, Peter, Karoly, Bela, Lazslo, Robert (?!), Zsuzsanna / Zsuzsa, Julia.
Orsolya is particularly appealing because Ursula is one of my top ten names for a girl. And, well, I like bears a lot. :-)

I like all of them to some extent, but I especially like:
Emil, Gaspar, Gusztav, Kazimir, Oszkar, Rikard, Roman, Rudolf (a family name for me), Zsigmond
Alida, Beata, Brigitta, Erzsebet, Franciska, Frida, Ilona, Jozefa, Juliska, Katarina, Magdalena, Mara / Mariska, Margareta (a family name for me) Marta, Rahel, Teodora, Terezia, Valeria, Vilma, Zsofia.

You must have a great list of family names to work with.
Thanks!

Ooh, these are nice!
In a vacumn, I love Kazimir (I think Mir would be an awesome nickname), Emil, Katarina, Mara, Marta, Rahel and Zsofia. I don't mind Juliska and Mariska as nicknames only but they sound a little bit hissy. I like Zsuzsanna a lot but Zsazsa is way too cutesy on its own. Terezia has a lovely sound and I prefer it to Teresa. Alida, Valeria, Kalman and Imre could grow on me.
I'd add (leaving out the ubiquitous ones like Alexander):
Adrienn
Amalia
Anasztazia
Andrea (I assume it's ahn-DRAY-ah in Hungarian, which is the only way I like it)
Izabella
Kamilla
Karolina
Katarina / Katalin "Kata / Kati"
Klara
Luca (LOO-tsah)
Melania
Milena
Petra
Rozsa
Rozalia
Andras
Elek (not sure about this one...I might like it)
Izsak
Jakob
Jozsua (YOH-zhoo-ah)

No problem! I'm glad you like Mir. It has a great meaning and I think it sounds really awesome too. Glad you liked some of the suggestions.
I love these!
My favorite:
MALE: Emil, Kazimir, Oszkar, Rudolf, Todor
I would use Emil, Oskar (this spelling) and Rudolf in a heart beat if my boyfriend would let me!
FEMALE: Alida, Beata, Franciska, Katarina, Magdalena, Mara Margareta, Marta, Teodora, Terezia,
Katarina has been a favorite for years. I am really loving Alida at the moment, and I've been having a love affair with Magdalena/Magdalene for a while. Teodora is far better than Theodora, ditto for Terezia for Theresa.
I wish my boyfriend was more adventurous with names!

Yay! Perhaps a trip to Buda-Pest could inspire him?
If I could get him to go. :-D
Though a trip to Eastern Europe for our honeymoon might be a grand idea (he refuses to do a Middle East or Asia trip)
Thanks, Bear - I'll start trying to talk him into it.

Benedek (tad too similar to Benedict the Pope and Benedict Arnold, though)
Emil (love on a boy)
Gusztav
Imre
Istvan
Kazimir
Oszkar (prefer Oskari)
Rikard
Roman
Zsigmond (slightly too similar to Sigmund Freud, though)
Alida
Franciska
Ilona (I names are so undeniably cool)
Juliska
Magdalena
Mara (my mom's name)
Mariska
Margareta (prefer Margarita, the Spanish form)
Vida
Zsuzsa (if this is a form of Susan then I love it)

And what is it about "i" names? I've had a special yen for them for years.

I think it's that they're unusual
And they also just look so fresh and cool. Seriously, do you actually know any more than like 2 people with names that begin with the letter i?

Sorry, had to laugh at this since 'I' names have been #1 for 20 years in 1970/80 and I know a ton of them:-)
I like Roman and Mara
Thanks!
P.S. Top ten most popular names in Hungary for 2006
This is the most recent list I could find, http://babynamestats.com/hungarian-top100-2006.html
1. Bence / Anna
2. Mate / Boglarka (1193 little Boglarkas!)
3. Lavente / Reka
4. David / Zsofia
5. Adam / Lili
6. Balazs / Viktoria
7. Daniel / Hanna
8. Tamas / Petra
9. Balint / Vivien
10. Peter / Eszter
I'm thrilled to see my favorite boy's name Peter made the list. The viral Lily bug seems to have hit Hungary too. It's good to see Petra make the girl's list.
As a side note, Attila was the 20th most popular name for a boy. There were 784 little Attila the Hungarians born in 2006.
As for my dream list, Balazs and Zsofia made it into the top ten. I almost put Eszter on my list, but trimmed it to keep it manageable.
