Nicknames for Octavia? (and a few others?)
Octavia is wrestling a bit with Adelaide for #3 again. I think it fits better actually. Adelaide is sparkly and brilliant and young, while Minnie and Cordelia are introverted, darker, and wittier. and older. The main reason it fell off in the first place was because I do not like a lot of its nicknames. (Not because it's an ordinal. The reason I justify Octavia and not Quentin is because Octavia is so similar to Octave which is very important in music, etc. 8 has significance.) I think Octavia needs a pretty steady nickname, because it really is VERY heavy.
Cora and Octavius has me thinking a bit about nicknames.
Nicknames I had tossed around in the past:
Tay: hate this.
Octy and Octie: LOL bad :(
Minor: because my love of Octavia is based largely off of Octavia Minor. This is too contrived for me though. It's also too similar to Minnie.
Via: so contrived and precious. I dislike it a lot.
Tock: I think this is really cute actually, but I tried saying a few times and it doesn't seem realistic.
Nicknames I am tossing around now:
Tave - someone asked about Octavia "Tave" earlier and I condemned it ruthlessly. I am coming around to it a bit now. It still sounds a bit too hip to me.
Tavy / Tavie - NOT Tavi - I am surprised by how much I like Tavy. I'm not warm to it yet though.
Davy / Davie - LOL Idk about these or whether I can like them on a girl. For some reason Davy is winning over Davie though.
Cate - possibly? All of the sounds are there. Could this work or is it silly?
Kit? I was trying to work the "c" sound into a few nicknames. "Ctavia," I said. "Ct. Kit." Kitty? I think I like Kit more, I'm not sure.
Tock I am still tossing around.
Tocky also. This might be a bit more realistic.
Ticky also might be more realistic. I'm not sure whether the fact that a tick is, you know, a tick is getting to me or not.
Cat / Caddy - it seems like a natural jump to make to me.
Teevie - a natural nickname for Tavy, after saying it a few times.
Vivi - like a bit, but said Veevee and not Vivvy. Do not like very much at all.
Viva, Vee - do not like.
Vita - LOL I am really grasping at straws here. Idk if I want a V involved at all.
Otta - why I oughta! I like it though.
Ottie - hm.
Anyway.
I was also tossing around Mimi instead of Minnie and Bobby instead of Rudy (for Minerva Maria and Rudolf). Justifying Bobby because it comes from the same root that Robert does. I definitely prefer Minne and Rudy though.
Tocky is winning right now, but I really like Caddy. Oh! Idea! Caddy for Cordelia?
Minnie, Caddy, and Tocky/Ticky/Tavy/Otta/Ottie
*snort* I hope she would be Cordelia most of the time.
Caddy for Cordelia, guys? Approve or not?

Difficult. Octavia does not lend itself well to nicknames. Hmm.
I think my favorites from your general list would be Tavy and Vivi. I don't like the Oc-/Ot- nicknames at all, or any of the clocky ones either. Kit could work, I guess, but Cate really feels like a stretch (ditto Rudolf nn Bobby). If I met an Octavia nn Cate, I would guess that she was really an Octavia Catherine and that Cate was chosen in defiance of her fn instead of in relation to it. Davy from Octavia feels peculiar, so I would stick with Tavy, but if you're willing to consider Davy, perhaps I could interest you in Tavish? It would be more intuitive, and I like it more than many of your other choices. To be completely honest, I would stick with Adelaide and not worry about nicknames for Octavia. :-)
Minerva nn Mimi is as sweet as can be, but as far as Cordelia nn Caddy goes, I say no, no, no.

Tavy seems to be winning.
Cate doesn't feel nearly as stretched to me as Bobby does for Rudolf! Hm.
Tavish? Pronounced Tayvish or Tahvish? I can see calling an Octavia "Tavy" Tavish as an affectionate nickname quite frequently.
But I love Octavia...! :P
Ach no one likes Caddy :( I still like it a lot. I probably should not be thinking this far into the future anyway though.

I'm not at all a fan of nicknames.
Sorry if you already said this, but I quite like Tavia (or, as you said, Tavie). Still three syllables, but an easy progression to make, and it sounds so much less contrived than any of the others. It also fits in with other well used names, e.g. Olivia. (That way your children won't be so embarrassed by their mothers name-nerdiness, which is what I assume you are trying to achieve by having nicknames) Also, Tavie seems to have some about in a similar fashion to Victoria nn Tori.
I prefer Bobby to Rudy, simply because my mother used to call my sister and I nudy rudy's when we ran around naked after a bath when we were younger (sorry for that, but every time you post it I think that). Buuuut Bobby is quite contrived (for Rudolph)and I prefer Robbie as a nn for Robert.
I also hope Cordelia would be just that most of the time too. The reason Cordelia never earned a permanent spot on my PNL was because I hate all of the nns for it. (well, as stated before, I hate the concept of nns altogether, but that is irrelevant)
Mimi sounds ridiculous and sort of...tacky. I prefer Minnie by far.
To be perfectly honest, I think there is nothing wrong with Adelaide. I think she could go by just Adelaide quite easily.

Tavia feels like two syllables to me, TAYV-ya. It fits in really well, I agree, but that's part of why I dislike it.
My namenerdiess is part of my nicknaming policy, and it's really most of it when it comes to Minne and Rudy for Minerva and Rudolf. I really do think that Minerva and Rudolf would get teased almost incessantly if they didn't have nice comfortable nicknames to sit back on. My desire for nicknames for Octavia is simply because I like Octavia written and said about five or six times - heck, I love it - but before too long I start to feel a bit silly. The same thing happens with Cordelia, but Cordelia can easily become Corrie, Delia, or Della for a few minutes. Octavia would become Octy, Tave, or Tavia. Octy is ridiculous and Tavia is so damn SWEET! Tave and Tavy are both really cool sounding, you know? like Jade and Maeve and Tay and all of these self-important, long-A heavy trendy floppy pseudo-names that infuriate me so much. (Occy wouldn't be that bad actually.)
Hee hee nudy rudy! Maybe that is what his wife will call him.
I like a lot of Cordelia's nn's. I am curious about what you mean when you say you dislike them. Do you dislike ALL of them or just permanent ones, or the concept of planned ones? I can definitely understand hating planned ones. Someone used to post about Ceridwen "Poet" and that made me want to punch everyone. Zelda Lenore "Poe," as much as I love Clippy's combos, also makes me a bit sad. I think they should come naturally. When I browse nickname ideas I try to think of what would come naturally if I were addressing an Octavia. I am trying to figure out whether there are enough of these names that I like that I wouldn't mind having an Octavia. KWIM?

Ah. yes. I think we discussed our slight differences in pronounciation of ~ia endings when it came to Cecilia. But anyway.
hmmm. The concept of nicknames irks me mainly because of the planned ones on here. e.g.Ceridwen nn Poet. That is awful. But, I think my dislike of nicknames has been pressed on me by my mother, whose name is Elizabeth. I think that she simply gets very tired of all of the different things people call her, so gave my sister and I nicknameless names. Also, my father's name is Joseph nn Joe, and he had similar problems with nicknames as a child (My grandmother, bless her, thought it would be cute to call him Jody).
Cordelia. I love saying it, I think it is beautiful and melodic and really just good fun to say. However Corrie is just...kind of...well I can't quite pinpoint it but I just don't like it. I seems too close to Cory, which I don't like. I hate the cord in Cordy, and Delia is plain not my style. Lia could grow on me, but I have bad associations with Leah, so it isn't really usable.
I love Minnie to bits. I have a great-great-aunt with the name, and she is just the spunkiest 93-year-old you ever met. (Plus she often sends 20 pounds to "buy an icecream" :P) I can sort of see the appeal of Mimi, and I think it is quite cute on a little kid, but over the age of three stops being cute.
A little Adelaide nn Addy might get lost among the Addisons. Hmm but I do quite like it...I'll have to think about that.
Lucretia is alright. I can sort of see you getting hassled because of it's myth, but how many people in the general popluation are going to know that she was raped? I don't particularly like the -cre- sound in the middle, I think it sounds sort of rude. But hey.

Tavie has long been my favorite nickname for Octavia (which I love), followed by Tavia. There really aren't any others that I like for it.
All other nickname suggestions that come to mind for it have already been mentioned by others.
Mimi would be cute as an occasional nickname for Minerva Maria, but I really dislike Bobby for Rudolf... I just dislike Bobby in general, though.
Caddy for Cordelia, guys? Approve or not? Not. ;)

Bobby has grown on me a LOT lately. I guess it's because of Twin Peaks, which is weird because that is one frightening character. But it seems sensible and friendly and pleasant without being ridiculous. There is also a really great violinist Robert McDuffie called Bobby (perhaps Bobbie...?) who is REALLY incredible and REALLY nice and has very much heightened the appeal of Bobby for me. It definitely doesn't work for Rudolf though! I suppose I will try to sell it to my sister, who is planning on using Robert.
Poor Caddy! No one likes her! I like Caddy a lot after reading Sound and the Fury. I hated it at first but it grew on me a lot. I also like Maury a lot on its own as a GP, but non-GP as a nickname for Maurice. Or possibly a feminine form of Maurice!
Thanks.

I always wanted to use Tave if I used Octavia.
I find Davy on a girl so cute, and really wish I could find a full name for it. Ottie is kind of cute too.
I also like Avia that Hannah Ruth suggested

Maybe it was you that I ruthlessly condemned Tave about :P I hope you do use Octavia.
I hope Davy on a girl grows on me more, I really want to like it.
Ty!

Let's see, this is hard. The ones I can think of are:
Tova
Tata
Tivee
Ova
Ovie (like O.V.?)
And I could see Kit working.
Tova

Tova! Tova is neat!
Tata sounds a bit dirty to me. Tivee I think we agree upon, I prefer it spelled Teevie though. Ova is nice but it sounds a bit eggy to me. I like Ovie also. Maybe initials! Octavia Verena! I am so excited about initials now. :P
Thanks!

I like Kit best. Kit is cool (but not in a totally hip way IMO) interesting and so unexpected. Hmm.. I should consider Kit for myself :)
Or, if your in the combo mood, you could try good ole fashioned nns from initials. Not sure how that'd work out, but it's an idea.
ETA: Ack! How could I forget to mention this to you! This girl at school, with Sri Lankan heritage, is called Ovia (ov-ee-a) and we occassionally call her Ovy (ov-ee). I was just thinking the other day how great an Octavia she would make (very pretty, regal girl) with nn Ovy. And I was meaning to tell you :)

I like Kit a lot also. I think it would be Kitty quite frequently and I think it kind of works.
Ooh! Initials! What are good O initials? Opy. Oby. Ody. Ody!!!! Octavia D...emetria. demelza. Daria. Diana. Irene, Iris, Isabelle, Ida, Iphigenia, Isis, Yolande, ... :D Odie! I love Odi Ody Odie. That is DEFINITELY something to think about, thanks a lot!
What else do I like with O? Oce? Ome? Oly! Octavia Lavinia! Oze, Ozy, Ooz, Ok. Imagine meeting an "O.K." Oh my god that would be confusing. I love it. Octavia Katarina. Hahahaha. OJ. O.Z. I rather like Oz and Ozzie actually. Octavia Zephyrine. Heee! Oh my goodness! This is so exciting! Initials!
I actually really, really like Octavia Zephyrine.
I am so excited.
Ovy is awesome also!
Thanks a ton!

Ava would work. Avie also works, I like it better than Ava. It might grow on me, although it is a bit pretty.
I like Cora a lot but on its on right. It doesn't feel very nicknamey to me at all. If Cordelia had a cor-based nickname at all it would be Corrie, and I dislike that. If it wasn't Caddy it would be Della or Delia. I don't think she'd get a permanent nickname though.
Thanks!

I work with a girl named Octavia and she is always called Octavia. I think you should give up on nicknames for it. They all sound either silly, ugly, or contrived.
Agree on that last point :P
That is awesome that she's always called Octavia! Good for her.
Do you feel a bit stupid addressing her though? I don't know. I feel like making someone else have to call someone Octavia all day would make them say OcTAAAvia *eyeroll this is entirely ridiculous*.

Nicknames I am tossing around now:
Tave - is VERY similar to the Dutch sound for the word for b*tch, so from me a definate: NO!
Tavy / Tavie -I think Tavie is kinda cute. Tavy looks too navy for me.
Davy / Davie - I'f prefer Tavie then.
Cate - too much of a stretch
Kit - nah...
Tock - doesn't that sound like what sportsmen wear to protect their... you know..
Tocky - no!
Ticky - sounds a lot like dicky, I don't like it
Cat / Caddy - Cat = an animal, so nms. Caddy helps a golfer, so no.
Teevie - you mean like: TV?!
Vivi - I'd prefer Vivia / Tavia
Viva, Vee - me neither :)
Vita - nah..
Otta - nms
Ottie - could grow on me...
One I'm missing on your list is: Tia, or Avi / Avie / Avy (pron. like how I say Evie, AY-vee), or Otia? Ovia? Taia? can't think of anything else decent at the moment..
I prefer Minnie over Mimi (by far), Bobby is way too much of a stretch for me. Caddy is nms, I don't see it as a nice nn for Cordelia either.

I generally prefer girls' nicknames to end in -ie, but lately I am all about y. It seems so complete and sweet! It does look a lot like Navy though.
Which is actually kind of cute!
LOL all of the sexual things you mentioned. Octavia is so awkward like that. I turned down so many vulgar nicknames that came up when I was tossing around - Titty, Tee-tee, Viti (VD), Ovia (which I see you suggested, it sounds a lot like Ovary to me). Tavia sounds a lot like Labia except with a v, which is a very *feminine* letter and is therefore very gross to me.
Teevie is like TV, but in TV the emphasis is more evenly distributed. Teevie is more like Stevie without the S.
Tia and Avy (Avy is really cool looking!) are both really nice, but they seem like they are both trying to hard to make Octavia ~pretty.~ And it can be pretty but I prefer it honest.
People don't seem to like Caddy! It grew on me pretty fast after reading The Sound And The Fury, where it's a nickname for Candace. I think it's very solid and sweet.

Tave - This is ok I think, not bad at all
Tavy / Tavie - I prefer Tavie personally, but think it works
Davy / Davie - Can't see it on a girl
Cate - No, I can't see it
Kit? - POSSIBLY...
Tock - In theory I like it... but can't imagine shouting it across the playgroud
Tocky - don't like this at all... prefer Tock
Ticky - no
Cat / Caddy - maybe Cat, but not Caddy
Teevie - I know someone called Steve that I sometimes call this
Viva, Vee - - I agree with you
Vita - LOL... I don't think it works
Otta - not bad, but could be mistaken for Otto. Which I really like, but prolly not what you're going for
Ottie - don't like this
So... out of them all I think Tave, Tavie, Kit, Tock, Cat, Teevie and Otta could work, but my favourites are Tave and Cat.

Yeah same about Tock. I can actually see shouting Tocky across the playground a lot more easily. It is kind of weird. I like Tock in theory but not practice, I like Tocky in practice but not theory.
I actually considered Otto as a nickname at first. Otta would probably become Otto a lot. And then probably Ottoline... how much fun!
Thanks!

Oct- names RULE! :-P
Tave - Although it's now my dear Octavius' nickname, I think it would be great for Octavia. :-)
Tavy / Tavie - I like Tavy.
Davy / Davie - Well, Dave got bad reviews on Octavius, so I don't know if it would work.
Cate - That is brilliant! But I still like Tave.
Kit - Meh...
I have to get to class soon, so I'll just list the ones I like out of the rest. Maybe later I'll come back and finish. (Sorry!)
Teevie - a natural nickname for Tavy, after saying it a few times.
Vivi
Vita (I'd like Vida [VY-dah] better)
Otta
How about Tavia?
I'm glad you approve of Cate! It doesn't seem the stretch to me that it does other people, it's just switching the A sound with the T sound...
I was thinking Tavy might be a bit more feminine against Tave.
Vida would be a REALLY neat nickname! for something with a long I in it. Not sure it works for O though.
I don't really like Tavia, it is too pretty and sweet. I can see Tavia charting on its own. Plus it sounds a bit medical and feminine. Thanks though!

Thought of another one
It looks horrible written (hence the reason I haven't written it yet), but if you say it (AH-kah), it might work. It's got some spunk, don't you think? It would be *takes deep breath and then whispers* Oca/Aca/Aka.
Actually, Akka is the Inuit word for Uncle, and I have no idea why it popped into my head. I like that spelling more than the others, which, as you might have guessed, I don't like. At all.

Haha. It does sound kind of neat. Occa? Ocka? LOL
Occy occured to me, kind of similar. LOL It looks really bad written. It would be cute occasionally though.
Really cute actually!
Hm hm hm!
Thanks!

Ocka is much better than Oca! :-)
For Octavia I say a good nickname could be Octie/Octy.
But I don't like that! Did you read my post? :(
I mean, really!
Did you even
Like did you click on it? I had such a long list of nicknames I wanted feedback on and you kind of mindlessly give me two I had rejected promptly up at the very top! Would YOU want to be called Octy? Did
How did you manage to reply to my post without even clicking it?

maybe its just that. . .
your post was SOOO long that she got bogged down? I mean i dont like Octie either but i mean it does seem like a logical choice

Well yeah, it's a logical choice - the MOST logical choice! How could I have gone through that much space without having stumbled upon the single most obvious nickname for a name I'm asking about 15 nicknames of?
anyway.
anyway.
Just because something's a logical choice doesn't mean that you should just go for it when you hate it.
Why respond at all when you can't get through the entire post? I'm sorry but this just bugs me.

I am sorry. I skimmed through you post. Just calm down. Out of the nicknames you suggested I like Tavy the best. Otta is in second place. I don't know, but Tocky sounds kind of silly.
Sorry for being a bit snippy. I do get a bit tired of people not reading my posts when I have clearly put thought into them. I agree about Tocky sounding silly, but I think it might work in real life. I think I like Tavy the best too. Thanks for the feedback.
