English Pronounciation of Valentin
Hello, the name Valentin is pronounced "va-len-teen" in German. I am not sure if it is the same in English, or if it would be changed to the English form "Valentine", like in Valentine´s day. What do you think?
THX very much,
Tonks

I had a Great Uncle named Valentin, pronounced val-en-TEEN, so that's how I, a Yank, automatically say Valentin when I see it. Valentine always gets val-en-tyne from me, because I associate it with Valentine's Day and that's how it's pronounced.

I live in the U.S. I think Valentin would be pronounced va-len-teen here and Valentine would be pronounced va-len-tyne here, but I could be wrong. I don't think I've ever actually seen Valentin here before.

I think this technically goes on the facts board, but I'm not sure.Valentine is the English form of that name (Valentinus), but that doesn't mean that you should add an e and change the pronunciation to use it in an English-speaking area.
