Beau
I adore, love and completely enjoy the name Beau for a little girl. I think it is soooo precious and completely... sigh, beautiful. I mean, it does mean beautiful in French, why can't it be a girls name?
I don't generally like boys names on girls, but this one I can't et over. So, what do you think? Let the lashings begin...

I like it for both a girl and a boy but I prefer girl, like you!
I understand that you feel that it's pretty for a girl. And pronunciation-wise I'd agree with you but the fact is, were your daughter ever to venture into a French-speaking region of the world she would recieve extremely odd looks and plenty of comments.
B/c the feminine form is Belle
But Isabeau is feminine so you could name her Isabeau and use Beau as nn. I don't like Beau as a formal name for a girl.
"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."

That's a good idea .... I love Isabeau :-)

It does mean beautiful, but tt's the masculine form, so I don't think it makes sense on a girl.

Yea, no it can't. It means handsome, thats it, thats it's meaning. Belle means beautiful, Jolie means pretty, and Beau means handsome. And thats how it works.

The database is neither perfect nor absolute . . .
Mike does his best, but there are errors both of knowledge and of omission in some of the entries. The fact that it's "in the database" is a good sign that it's true, but without a French dictionary (or a French speaker) we can't be sure.

Some dictionaries say beautiful, some say handsome, some say both. If you're referring to a man, or a masculine object, and you want to call it beautiful, you would say beau, not belle.
I think the confusion may be coming from the fact that females are typically described as "beautiful" while men are "handsome," although both words can be used for either gender.

Wrong.
Beau can mean beautiful as well as handsome. If you want to say the weather is beautiful in French you would say it is "beau" because the word "weather" in French is masquline.
Please don't spread false information about meanings as fact.

Beau is all masculine to me. It's a masculine word in French. It's short for Beauregard, which is a male name. It's also slang for "boyfriend."
If I wanted to call a daughter "Beau," I would name her Bonita or something and call her "Bo."
That said, you are free to do whatever you want, and I have seen much worse names for girls than Beau.

Bo is a traditional male name in Sweden
Bo is all male to me, but in USA it is obviously different.
"You sought a flower and found a fruit. You sought a spring and found a sea. You sought a woman and found a soul. You are disappointed."
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (Edith Södergran 1891-1923)

It's masculine to me as well, and the two examples I gave are the only feminine Bo's I've ever heard of. However, I could see Bo being used on a girl more so than Beau, hence my suggestion : )
CIARDA"A safe name is sometimes a smart name. A safe name is many times a boring name"
It means a beautiful sure but to use it for a girl is like saying "Isnt he beautiful" every time you see a pretty baby girl
Of corse theres nothing to stop you using it for a girl though I think its better as a nickname rather than a formal name

Well, it "can't" be a girls' name because it could only refer to a male, or masculine object, in French.
But really, there is no "can't" about it. You are free to name your daughter Beau if you so wish. And I rather like it for both sexes :-)
