What are BtN's top names? (Top 5's please!)
Sometimes it seems like a name is popping up in every second post. I thought it'd be interesting to see what the most popular names are among us BtN'ers. I'm guessing our Top 10 will look a little different from the SSA Top 10.
So here's how it works. Post your Top 5 singles names (no combo's, please) for each gender, and I'll tally them up and post a list. It'd be helpful when you reply to change to subject of your msg to you user name and Top 5, eg Delphi_Blue's Top 5- to help me keep track when I'm tallying. Also, when commnting on others, as I know you love to do, if you could change the subject to reflect this, this would also be helpful.
*NB: when I'm tallying, multiple spellings of the same name (eg Kaitlin, Caitlyn, Katelynn etc) will be grouped as the same name- so clarify your intended prn. on any names that might be an issue.
Ofcourse, the more people that reply, the truer reflection of our group the list will be, so get posting. Yay!

I love Xanthe.
Yep...
Just so you know, I've only counted your first names, not your middle names.

Combos aren't allowed, if you read Delphi's instructions - this is a strictly first-names-only list she's making.

Yay for Arthur! I also like Annie on your list. It has a quaint prettiness to it, if that makes sense.

I like them all.
Ai....Question?
I know it's hard but I need a choice between Susannah and Verity. As with all the others whove given me 6 names, I'm putting down Susannah and Finn as your votes because they are what you typed first. If you'd like to change this, please let me know ASAP.

I need one more please!
You've only got 4 girls names. It's not a big deal, but it msses up the stats, and would make my life easier if you had another :)
Thanks.

Go ahead and put Mira. It's automatic for me to type both, I can never decide between them ; )

OMG, your sig line is cracking me up.
I'm sure the original version was a man speaking about a woman, and both versions taken together are hilarious... especially today when my husband and I are feeling petulant towards each other yet again. Thanks for the giggle =D

Maybe not
But as she's doing this on a volunteer basis, I think it's fine. If you want to, why don't you do separate counts for separate spellings?

*Shrug* I was going to collect the names anyway - I make lists. But the way I would collate it makes it easier *not* to combine multiple spellings.
Okay
You do seperate spellings then, if that's what you'd like.
I'm fully aware the SSA list does not combine spellings. I was trying to make things easier- It's not the most accurate comparision, however you manage it, and this is the way I've decided to manage it.
If you want to do it better though, go right ahead. The names are all here for you.

Oh, and I realise this sounds snippy
It's not meant to be. I've read it over but am not sure how else to say what I want to say. It's late and I'm tired and I've been at the computer half the day, so I apologize- it's not meant to sound snippy. I understand what you mean, but am sticking to the way I'd already decided. And seriously, feel free to post your own results- it'll be another list to compare too.

I was going to post a very unpleasant reply, and I'm still in half a mind to - I don't actually appreciate having my head bitten off for making a suggestion, given that we're both obviously quite interested in the topic and therefore have an opinion on how it should be done.
However, I accept your apology.
I may or may not post my results - depends how much time I have once this thread slips off the board where it can't get any more replies.
In case you're interested, I'm collating very simply: I copy the names into a word document, then when I have all of them I'll sort alphabetically. That's my base data. Then, in a new file, I'll delete the repeated names and leave a number tabbed next to each name. After that, I'll sort by the number, giving me the rankings.

Something else I thought of...
It wasn't intended to be me biting your head off- you are right, you were just offereing an opinion. It's just hard to convey tone over the internet, and I didn't do a very good job of it last night. Sorry once again.
Something else I thought of- the SSA list is based only on American data, whereas ours comes from various places across the globe. So that affects it too, I guess- I hadn't thoguht of that. I'll make note of both these issues when I post the results so people can take them into account.
Interesting also to hear how your doing it. My method is pen and paper- I write down the names in a big long list, but each name is written down only once. If it appears again, I go back an dput a mark next to it. If it's a different spelling, I also record that. I'd already planned to put the different spellings in my results eg if Caitlin makes the top name:
1) Caitlin (7 votes) Caitlin (3), Kaitlyn (2) Katelynn (1), Katilin (1)
Or something along those lines. Anyway, thanks for your opinions and suggestions. I better get back to these names.

Nephthys. Oh, my god. I never thought I'd see this on anyone's list! I love Nephthys. I probably wouldn't be brave enough to use it myself, but if I saw a little girl with this name . . . I'd cry with joy. Ivy and Hazel are also nice. :D
I love Vladimir and Severin. Nicholas is always handsome.

The only new name you put was Wilbur- the rest have already been mentioned, which means just putting marks next to them, instead of adding 10 new names. Brilliant- it's not much, but it helps ;)

Thats ok :)
You weren't the only one! I know it can be hard to get it down to just 5, I struggled with that myself. It's just for my stats, I need only 5 names a person so I can calculate- if I take 6 from some it makes it too hard!
Thanks, I'll mark down Vienna.

Just so you know...
I counted Miles, but not Langston. I'm only taking 5 votes per person, sorry- I had trouble narrowing it down too. If you'd prefer Langston to make the list instead, let me know and I'll fix it.

When will you be posting the results?
As soon as I can...
It'll probably be a little while, partly because there's so many names to go through, partly because I want to give everyone a fair chance to respond. So it won't be today (gotta allow for time differences) and it most likely won't be tomorrow either :)
*and they are gone :) I'm enjoying keeping it to myself thus far ;) See above for stats*

I know a man named Alexis. I've known him since we were both small children. He's always gone by Alex. I doubt there are many people in his life apart from family who realize his name is not Alexander. But I've never heard him say he's embarrassed by his name. He might be, though. I understand why you think it's unusable. Same raw deal for the boys as with Ashley, etcetera. Once it's on a girl, it can't come back. That kills me.
honestly?
I have no idea of the origin. There's a girl on my friend's residence floor with the name, and she prn. it MAR-see-nuh. I keep meaning to ask about it on the facts board.

I think this thread is still useful.
1) There are people who use polls only, and not the boards, with PNLs.
2) People usually have more than 5 names on their PNL.
3) Why not? xD

Oh, I agree
These are more like names we'd actually use at the moment, whereas PNL are just every name we like, usually, so I feel that the stats are interesting but will reflect different things. I just thought you'd like to see it.

Oh, I would..
I'd deffinatley like to see it. It's interesting., and it'll be interesting to compare. I know my name list has 86 names, so it's alot ;) Pretty much names I like, whereas this'll be an indication of names we really like enough to use (or in some cases have use)

My PNL has 312 names. They aren't names I absolutely love, just names I would somewhat consider.
