I don't think anyone should shy away from using the name on a boy because some idiots might associate it with the Disney film.
I think of "The Little Mermaid" when I hear the name Ariel, and I assure you I am not ignorant or an idiot. I know that Ariel is a perfectly acceptable male name, and I do like it on a boy in theory, but that doesn't change the fact that when I hear the name, my mind immediately goes "Little Mermaid!"

Kids get teased for lots of reasons, and while I'm totally against out-there names that just look like an invitation to teasing, the problem with this one is relatively minor IMHO.
