Well we can all agree on one thing
This post has sparked quite the debate, almost four months I've had an acount on this site and I've never seen anything like this.

It's quite entertaining, isn't it?
0, these come up every once in a while ... :D
A Precious Diamond is...
Ridiculous. She's adorable, but has a bad name. Are they going to call her A? Or A Precious? Oh boy.

She's an adorable baby, but I agree, has a tacky name. My main problem with it is not the phrasiness but the "A" as her first name. When the teacher does roll call at school, she'll be listed as just "A", which everyone will probably think is an initial for something. How confusing! At least everything is spelled right. If I were her, I'd choose a real A- name as soon as I could!
As an aside, maybe her brother will be called O Boy... lol.

actually her FN is A Precious, her MN id Diamond
How do you know that just from the silly growingfamily.com site?
seriously wondering...not being flip
seriously wondering...not being flip
because before I clicked on her name, it listed her as "A Precious" only.
I'd bet money they just did it to be cute on the website (or birth announcements). That isn't from birth certificates. My hospital used the same photo service and you just fill out their form.
at least I'm hoping I'm correct and no one would really choose that (crossing fingers)

you'd be suprised what people name their children, lol
Why do people do this?

Well, I've seen them all in the girl's section of the name book, plus I know girls named Remy, Gael, Avery, and Talbot. Avery and Talbot are my sisters. I can show you pictures if you're that set on them being boy's names.
Arden is listed as a girl's name in the name book: Latin, "ardent, sincere"
Harper: English, "musician, writer"
Remy: French, "jaded"
Gael: Hebrew, "energetic"
not meaning to start an argument, but I have never heard these names used on boys, and I have heard all of them on girls.

Arden Lowe, male character in My Sweet Audrina by V.C. Andrews. Not at all common on boys, but not unheard of, either.
Harper James Simon, son of Paul Simon and musician in his own right:
Remy LeBeau, aka Gambit, a character from a little comic book series called X-Men--perhaps you've heard of it?:
Gael Garcia Bernal, an actor probably best known for playing Che Guavera:
Your experiences may be with girls bearing these names, but your experiences aren't representative of the world as a whole.

Mmm...Yummy! I love Gael Garcia Bernal!
I've only seen one Arden, and he was a boy. ; )
And as we know, all baby name books are correct /eyeroll
Well, if baby name books aren't always correct, than who's to say that this site is?
Like I said, I was not meaning to start a huge controversy! I was just giving my opinions, to which, I believe, everyone is entitled?
Like I said, I was not meaning to start a huge controversy! I was just giving my opinions, to which, I believe, everyone is entitled?
Baby name books have a notorious reputation regarding their accuracy. I can't say yours is a very bad one since I don't know what it is. But this site has a very good reputation; its accuracy is why I post here. It's not perfect, but it tries to be and will correct mistakes. (unlike many sites I've visited)
Just FYI.
Just FYI.
The major difference between this site and baby name books...(m)
is that this is an etymology site, not a "kewt baybee nayme" site. All the names on this site are researched, which means that the meanings are never made up. Many baby name books simply make up nice meanings if the actual name has a not-so-nice meaning, or they don't know what the real meaning is. As an example, many baby name books/websites say that Charlotte means "little woman", when in fact it is a feminine diminutive of Charles -- and therefore has the same meaning as Charles (which is "man").
FYI etymology means "The process of tracing out and describing the elements of a word with their modifications of form and sense" according to the Oxford English dictionary. That's the reason why a lot of people like this site -- it appeals to our love of language, history, and study, not just whatever is trendy at the moment.

actually I would think Charlotte means "woman" since it is the feminine version of Charles wouldn't it?. A woman cannot be a man so how would Charlotte still mean "man".
This message was edited 8/2/2007, 7:22 PM
I don't think making it feminine would change the meaning of it. A woman can also not be Ireland, but Erin's still an acceptable name. etc
lol! too true
That makes me sad, I don't want Charlotte's meaning to be "man" eh. It's not pretty, lol.
In my own mind it's "woman", LOL. I'm being stubborn, wah..:(
In my own mind it's "woman", LOL. I'm being stubborn, wah..:(
I guess it's up to interpretation. But if the meaning "man" for Charles turns into "woman" for the feminine form, then does that mean "son of--" names turn into "daughter of--" names when used on girls? :-/
I don't think it matters...both Charlotte and Charles have so much history that it creates meaning IMO
I have seen all of them used on boys, and just beacause they're used on girls doesn't mean they're not boy's names. Many boys names are being stolen for girls. (and I say stolen, because once they're used often enough for girls, they are considered unusable for boys, as your attitude demonstrates.) These names have a longer history of use as boys names, despite modern usage and books.
I know they are used on girls. You can name a girl Edward but that doesn't change the fact that Edward is a boy's name.
Arden, Harper, Avery, and Talbot are all English surnames. I don't really like surnames on either sex, but they have been traditionally given to boys. I don't like the surnames-on-girls trend.
Remy is definately a French boy's name.

I actually like a lot of these...
But there are definitely some I can't stand:
Bayzil Andrian -Andrian isn't bad, and Basil is tolerable for me -but Bayzil? WHY?
Brimwin Conner -Sounds girly; even with Conner stuck on there.
Lawsen Wyatt -The E is slowly driving me mad the more I look at it.
Phineas Tucker -Hey... didn't he travel around the world in eighty days?
Phoenix Scott -I love Phoenix, and Scott is okay, but man do they run together!
Presley Erin -Erin is the girls' spelling, and Presley is... well... Yeah.
Riffin Daniel -Sounds like they're doing something horrible to poor Daniel.
Seaton Andrew -This sounds so southern. I hate it.
Tate Spofford -Tate's cute, but Spofford? I hope it's mom's maiden name, at least...
Zen Leedom -What the hey?!
A Precious Diamond -Okay folks, THIS has got to be the worst of them all! Never before have I seen a name that has screamed "tacky" any louder than this! When will the madness end?!?
Alden Hathaway -Big fans of Anne Hathaway, huh?
Auden Fairbarren -Auden is nice, but Fairbarren? What female in their right mind wants any association with being barren?
Breckyn Claire -Stop breaking Claire already!
Brinly Anne -Oh gosh, I almost said "Brine-ly".
Brooklynn Marcedies -Um... Is that... Mercedes?

If we wonder why young girls are dressing like hookers at ten and trolling for sex on the net at twelve, look no farther than some of these names
Ace Jason-Michael: Ace Jace, huh?
Stone Daniel: Why, what crime has Daniel committed?
Arden Harry: *howls* Hard 'n' Hairy! Woo-hoo!
Bayzil Andrian: Couldn't decide between Adrian and Andrew. Couldn't resist that tryndee y in Basil, either.
Brimwin Connor: Phony made-up pseudo-Celtic faerie name.
Christian Blue: Liek Prussian Blue, the twin white supremacist girl band?
Faden Taudvin: Fadin' to some color I can't imagine, but I bet it's taupe and tawdry.
Huck Harrison: Huck: the sound of a hiccup in the middle of a coughing fit. But it will prove endlessly entertaining when the other kids play rhyme games with it.
Jack Fox: A male fox?
Presley Erin: They probably have a big Elvis on black velvet painting in their trailer. And really wanted a girl.
Remy Gael: They sound like they wanted a girl too.
Seaton Andrew: Seatin' Andrew far away from the other kids' butt jokes.
Theaegan Goulet: The French/tryndee version of goulash.
Zen Leedom: Zen lead 'em into temptation...
A Precious Diamond: Screams trashy if ever anything did.
Ainslee Bhictoria: Another psuedo-Irish name!
Alden Bell and Alden Hathaway: Two shery-drunk ex-socialites living ina decrepit mansion in New England.
Amber Olive: It's great on salad.
Auden Fairbarren: She's fair, but she's barren.
Brooklynn Marcedies: A really sketchy car dealershi in Brooklyn. Probably a chop shop.
Caledonia Rose: The tryndee Celtic vocal group little Ainslee Bhictoria's and Brimwin's parents were inspired by.
Caraboo Grace: Aka, the Moose. God help her if she grows up fat and clumsy. And that boo name is going to age pretty fast. Come to think of it, a caribou isn't even graceful.
Dakota Sioux: Lily-white, blonde, blue-eyed child living in Connecticut, but her parents think they're "part Indian." Never mind which Indian tribe, choose the one that sounds cutest.

This made me laugh. Thank you.
Amporn
My boyfriend works at a Thai restaurant (owned, run, and mostly staffed by Thai people) and one of his bosses is named Porntip. Not like 'porn' is ever going to be my favorite name element, but at least in cases with names like Isabella Amporn I'm glad I can consider that maybe her parents were Thai or something, like you said. I'd be willing to give that name the benefit of the doubt, too. :-) Call me hypocritical but I can handle that kind of cultural relevance more easily than one that approves of, say, Sommer Storm Huntress.

wow. why so angry?
You know, I'm sorry, but I really think that the idea that "A Precious Diamond" is trashy just shows a lot of ignorance of African-American culture. This is certainly not a name that is meant to have any sexual connotations.
Your little exercise to me just proves that ANY name can be "trashed" by someone who's determined to disrespect it, not that the names themselves are "trashy."
Of course, YMMV.

It's trashy, and reminds me of a stripper
I'm Black and I saw that name as trashy, regardless of her ethnicity
If the little girl was Caucasian or Hispanic, the name wouldn't have been any less tacky or cutesy. I mean, this kid is going to have to grow up with this name (hmmm I wonder if her parents even gave a thought about that).
I think it's tacky, her parents apparently don't and it's just a difference of opinion and personal taste. As an African American, sometimes I don't even understand what a parent was going for when they named their precious child Princess or something (needless to say, these names aren't only given to African American children)...I guess that makes me ignorant of my own culture then.

I didn't look at her picture
And did not know she was black. Not that it would have changed my reaction to the name if I had known it.

My Little Darling
Sommer Storm Huntress
Those ae cutesy phrases, not names.

Good thing you don't live in China, then, where almost everyone has a name which is a phrase chosen by their parents for its meaning, many of which you probably would find "cutesy".
I'm very glad I don't live in China
But I'm sure that even in China, there are phrase names that Chinese people in general find cutesy, overdone or follish. It's not just us Ugly Americans.

Have we forgotten that it's an opinions board?
I see where you're going with this -- Rox's dislike of cutesy theme names somehow makes her less cultured or worldly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but your passive and somewhat condescending approach here can be confusing to us blue collar Americans. Funny, you're doing what you condemned her for. And on the subject of cutesy theme phrase names -- they don't have more or less merit than any other names, and Rox was expressing her dislike, as often happens on an Opinions board. If she disliked Beatrice Stella as a combo, would there be this reaction? Why has this sparked such controversy? She didn't make any comments on the race or socioeconomic status of Ms. Diamond in the first place. She thought the name was tacky, cheesy, lame. Big deal.

A Precious Diamond?
Is it Even Legal to name a kid that?
Is it Even Legal to name a kid that?
What will they call her? A? Ape D?
yes but it's horribly cutesy(m)
And the "a" really bugs me, otherwise it would be just a cheesy combo. Is she really going to be called with her whole name, sort of: "Come on, A Precious Diamond! Time for dinner, hurry, up, A Precious Diamond!"
Not to mention the Dr/Judge/Rev/Executive director of the board test...

I don't have the same idea about the Dr/Judge/Rev/Executive director of the board that most of you all do.
In the first place, that's a really "middle class" idea. I don't think many blue collar or working class families will think of it as being at all relevant to their child's future happiness.
In the second place, it's not something that really is relevant to whether or not someone would make a good physician, etc., etc., so one should strive to overcome the original kneejerk reaction that those names don't "go together" with those occupations. You should choose a physician based on his or her credentials, not on his or her name.

I'd actually concur with this
I've found myself really unable to do the Dr./Rev/etc thing lately - because I CAN see a Dr. Kayla McDonald, or a Dr. Precious or even a Dr. D'Shawna. Kayla would give me a minute's worth of shock because it's a young name to me, but that's it.
I still, think, however, that people do need to be cognizant of the fact that people DO judge people on their names - the same way the judge you on the way you look, act, speak, and dress. That said, each class of people dress/act in a certain way, and have customs and norms of their own. A Precious in African-American society will be accepted, and if/when she moves into a new social class, her naming choices will most likely reflect that move.

I am blue-collar/working class, thanks, and the thought of a Judge My Little Darling Jones or Dr. Cookie-Puss Goldfinger is still laughable.
No, of course the name itself has nothing to do with their highly specialized jobs.
It has everything to do with
1. Without even taking race or socioeconomic factors into account, and without stopping to analyze your own prejudices (we *all* have prejudices) would you expect somebody those parents thought that kind of name was cute to grow up to be a judge? The apple very often doesn't fall too far from the tree, after all.
2. The Scooter Libby Principle: what would you think of a grown, professionl and presumably intelligent adult who still goes by such a name? Nickname or formal name, it's the same thing.

I don't think much of Scooter Libby's name. He got a high position, after all. Condoleeza is a trendy name, yet look at her position. There's a Lovie Smith who's the coach of a great football team. Names wont prevent a person from getting an esteemed position, and if they really think it's their name that's stopping them, they Can always change it. Frankly I think it'd be more about the person's personality, skills, and ambition. A "bad" name is really a Scapegoat. though Cleveland could've left out the Comment about class. I really see no relevance in that.

people will get judged by their names even if it's unfair to(m)
Of course it would be wrong to judge a doctor or a lawyer just by their name, and no one is going to be actually entirely prevented from getting a good job just because their name. it's just that to a lot of people a trashy or weird 's going to make a bad impression. It'sl like with clothes, of course it's unfair to judge people by how they dress, but if you go for a job interview in a bank wearing torn jeans and lots of piercings, you're very unlikely to get the job no matter how great your credentials are (or if by miracle you do, you're going to get asked to change your look). As for working-class people not worrying about how the name sounds professionally, this is rather unfortunate, because it means they can't really imagine that their child might get an education and progress socially (whereas presumably most middle-class people think their kids are all go to college and have white collar jobs as a matter of fact, no matter how silly they may turn out to be). Ok, A Precious Diamond is better than Cobra, but only marginally so. In my own culture neither would be allowed anyway.

Just a random comment...
Scooter Libby's name is a childhood nickname and he hasn't always used it. IMO it is used politically, to make him seem a more benign character. It is definitely not an example of tacky naming.
From Wikipedia:
Libby was born to an affluent Jewish family in New Haven, Connecticut; his late father, Irving (Irve) Lewis Libby, was an investment banker.
The man is a US 'elite,' and isn't comparable to A Precious Diamond or to Sapphyre Skye.
edited to put elite in quotes so you know I don't look up to the man in any way whatsoever ... my point being just that he's from a fam that lives in the socioeconomic stratosphere

I agree
I'd much rather be named Cobra, In fact Pandora Cobra is my stage name (I'm a Classical Guitarist).
I agree...I would rather be named Cobra.
To each their own. :)
Cobra does sound a bit better to me in second position.
