I wonder if Romaine was Ms. Patterson's original given name? One of the most famous early 20th century American lesbians was Romaine Brooks, and it seems like an odd coincidence for her parents to have given her such an unusual first name and she also ends up as a lesbian activist. So perhaps her own legal first name isn't Romaine.
