But I prefer it as a nickname for a more formal name such as Matilda, Milla, Camilla, Amelia, Emilia...

Nay because it's kinda cute on a small child but can you imagine an adult woman introducing herself at work as Millie? Doesn't do it for me!

Nay. It reminds me of an annoying character on Freaks and Geeks. One of the greatest shows ever, but not a character I'd like associated with my child. Most people wouldn't have that association with the name, of course.

"Nay" as a formal name in itself. I prefer it as a nickname for Millicent, which I think is lovely.

i have a friend whose baby is named Amelia and she calls her Millie. i just don't love it. It's a little too "cutesy" for me. i think as a nn for Amelia it would be okay. i love Amelia.

(it's yea and nay, not yay and nay . . . yea is pronounced 'yay')

I have friends with a daughter named Millicent Kathleen "Millie". I think it's cute.

I don't like Millie on its own, however, only as a nickname. It's too lightweight and childish as a full name.

...Is what I think of when I hear the name. I didn't used to like it, but now I don't mind it for someone else's child (nn or full name). If I knew her, she'd hear a lot of "Beat the drums 'cause here comes thoroughly modern Millie now!" from me, though. ;)

I asked this of some family awhile back and I got:

"Remind me of a millipede"
"Reminds me of meal worms"
"Reminds me of the band Millie Vanilli" (Which I don't even think is the name of that band from a long time ago)

Personally, I find it cute, but it is better as a nn.
