People in America, unless they are from Spain, aren't going to pronounce it mer-THE-dhes. I would like to say it mehr-SEH-dhes but I'd probably end up m(schwa)r-SAY-deez, like the car company :(

Pr. mer-SE-dhes. I fell in love with it reading The Count of Monte Christo, and I love the nn Sadie. However, I would never use it as a fn, just because everyone I've known associates it with the car. Unfortunate.

I love it--it's in my top ten. My preferred nn for it is Dee. I pronounce it mer-SAY-deez.
