It comes from the Russian root word for life: zhizn' ("ZHEE-zin"). Dr. Zhivago is a medical doctor concerned with biological life, but also a poet concerned with the metephysical side of life. Pasternak uses the root word for life in the name as symbolism.

The book is amazing. It is my hands-down favorite of all time. I first read it when I was too young to really grasp all of it and read it again last summer and fell in love with it all over again. I hope you enjoy it!
