I always think of the artist Aubrey Beardsley when I hear this name. (Do check out his art if you arent familiar with it because it's great.) For that reason, I have a positive association with this name on a boy. On a girl, it seems to lose that context for me.
To me, Aubrey seems trendy as a girl's name but sort of old-fashioned for a boy's name. I prefer old-fashioned names to trendy names. But either way, the sound of the name is quite nice and (in my opinion) would work well for either gender in that regard.
