Re: WDYT of Velma?
I have a grandmother whose first name is Velma, and for some reason she hates it. She goes by her middle name, Darlene. IMO, Velma is a much, much more attractive name than Darlene. I really like Velma and also Selma (but not Thelma); they've got such a retro feel and for some reason I also find them both kind of sultry.

When you grandmother was born, Darlene was a much "younger" name than Velma and most people her age would have much preferred it. I assume your grandmother was born in or near the 1940s. Back then Darlene would have had a much "sultrier" image than Velma. And when your grandmother was young, Velma of course wasn't yet "retro", it was just "old". It's perfectly logical that someone your grandmother's age would hate being named Velma. :)

I hadn't thought of it that way......but of course it makes perfect sense now that you've pointed it out! Thanks. I think another reason she hates it is her older brother named her, and he named her after his girlfriend at the time.
