WDYT of Rufus?
I have always loved the name Rufus. I especially like the combo Rufus Aaron. However when I told my friends that I likd this name they just laughed and said it was a dog's name. I was not very happy with them for saying that. So now I have gone off the idea of naming any future son this name because of that. I do not want my son to be bullied or teased and therefore hate his name. But I really do love this name and am very sad that people only associate it with dogs. Does anyone even know any dogs called Rufus? And also Rufus is in the Bible so this makes me love it even more!
So what do you think of Rufus? And do you have any names that you like but other people make fun off?

(I'm sorry I went off on a rant, but I feel very strongly about this and felt that I needed to defend the name Rufus.)

I love it too!
Rufus is a great name, I've always loved it. I know people who say it's a dogs name too. But then again, I love Jasper, Oscar and Felix and everyone says they are dog/cat names too! Unfortunatly I think there is teasing potential with the name Rufus, but if you really love it, then maybe just use it anyway. You could always use it as a mn instead.

I like it. It does remind me of Rufus Sewell (who alternates between being very attractive and creeping me out, strangely enough). I'm not sure I'd ever use it, though, because the only nicknames I can think of for it don't sound very nice :P Maybe as a middle name.
I also think of Rufus Wainwright; he did a nice rendition of the song "Hallelujah". ("Love is not a victory march; it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah." -- I like that song.) :)
So I don't really have any amazingly persuasive associations one way or another for it. Personally, evaluating it like I would any random name someone posted dog comment not important, I don't particularly like it, but I think it's fine for someone else. I love the mythology names, and goodness knows they're pretty "out there" so I'm not going to dissuade you from Rufus.

My family has a dog named Rufus...(m)
Since I have a dog called Rufus I kind of associates the name with him. BUT, I think it's a great name for a person as well. All of our dogs have names that are not really names for dogs (Rufus, Elsa Molly, Tekla, Tyra).
I would not laugh or think it was a dog's name if I heard it on a boy. I actually think it's a really "cool" name. I also know of an actor called Rufus something. If you feel that strong about Rufus I think you should use it. The more I think of it the more I like the idea of naming a boy Rufus. Don't care what your friends say. In this case I think they're wrong.

Thank you so much! Yes my friends are very wrong. Rufus is a great name and I think I will use it. I shouldn't care what other people think!

Yes, that's him! Thanks!
Yes, I have met a dog named Rufus, a big , loud, dribbly boxer mix. Yes, I associate the name with a dog.
I think that Rufus is one of those names that have a limited shelf life (most "classic" names are nonperishable, or can be revived easily, but some get stale and there's nothing much anybody can do to bring them back) and the use-by date is a distant memory. In that case, I say the best thing is to just discard it gracefully. lol
There si a singer, not very old, called Rufus Wainwright. I don't know how popular he is but I've seen him in Rolling Stone a few times, a few years ago. He is one of those aggressively gay, aggressively sullen "singer songwriters" types who make it fashionable to be depressed and depressing. lol That's if memory hasn't failed me. HIS father is Loudon Wainwright, who made his fortune on a song about, really, a dead skunk on the road.

I like Rufus Wainwright. :) And Rufus Sewell. They make me like the name more. I have met people (and animals), in real life, named Rufus so it doesn't seem all that far-fetched to me. I like it, though I'm not sure I'd ever use it. Yes, it is a little too 'out there' for most, and there are just other names I love more.
Dead Skunk In The Middle of the Road! For some reason, I like that song. Perhaps because it reminds me that I've so far avoided hitting a skunk with the car. Narrowly avoided.
I've avoided hitting them, but you can't avoidknowing all abut it when somebody else doesn't avoid them.
I have only heard the song a couple times, and while it isn't the dumbest song ever recorded, it is pretty darn dumb.
