I think it sounds like someone's a Mischa Barton fangirl--and since I don't like her, that makes it pretty cringe-worthy to me.
Mischa and Misha both are great nicknames for Michael. Masha's a nice Russian nickname with the same sort of sound--but it's actually a girl's name.

I've known a Misha and Mishi (he pronounced it "me-shee") both males from Eastern Europe, so I associate the name with a male, but still like it for a female.
I'm sure you're right. I never knew how it was spelled, just that it was pronounced "me-shee". He was from Slovakia.
