The German pronunciation is KEH-tuh (with a long "eh" sound). I think it's sweet :-)

Okay. It's really hard to describe the vowel sound considering I don't know what kind of accent you might have but it's somewhere between the a in Kate and the e in pet. I *believe* the final e would be pronounced also (it is in German words but names can be a little different) so it would be like kayteh or kehteh (second e like in egg). Anyways, how did your mother pronounce it? That's the pronunciation I'd use.
See I think I remember her saying it was pronounced KATH-uh... but it isn't a soft "th" sound, kind of like a "t" "th" sound.... I'm making no sense at all, sorry...
