I wish i was Russian!
I've been looking through Russian names, and really liking them.
Svetlana and Katya are my favorite. I met a girl named Svetlana, which got me started on Russian names. Is there any particular ethnic names you like?
Do you think it's weird to use an obviously ethnic name (Like svetlana) when you're not from that country?
Also, do you think it makes a difference if you can tell? If i named my daughter svetlana, and said my side of the family was russian (since our last name isn't) nobody would know. I knew someone who did this. But if a blonde haired boy was named Juan, people would know you're not of spainish speaking descent. I hope that made sense, lol. Just something i've been thinking about.

I could list arguments both pro and contra. All in all, I think the best, simplest and easiest way is to use names that are familiar/known in the country you live in. Secondly, if you're not a native, use the names of your own country.
But I also think that if you really love a Russian name, the lack of connection is not enough to keep you from using it. If I stay here, the case is simple: Hungary is a list-giving country. but if I choose to live somewhere else, I'd use my favourite names regardless of local custom.Russian names are beautiful, I also like Svetlana, and Tatiana, Natasha, etc.
And where the limit is? I'd probably avoid Chinese names e.g., and names that come from a highly different heritage.

I think it is what is familiar to us. Since as I read the couple of Russian names you posted Tatiana, Natasha...my name is derived from tatiana and I know a few natasha's that are not Russian and either am I. If your not sure about naming her that name then why not choose a name derived from Svetlana.

I do think it's a bit 'weird' but not offensive if you use the correct spelling/pronouncation etc which I'm sure you will.

I like some russian name too, my favourites one are Lev, Shura, Milan and Larissa.
I wouldn't mind giving a child a foreign name as long as you think it will fit him :)

I don't think it particularly matters if you name your child an ethnic name. It may confuse some people, but I knew a girl called Sonnai (prn 'son' 'eye'), and (allegedly a Japanese name) and she was as caucasian as you get, and the name suited her perfectly. However, I don't think it would be appropriate to lie about your own ethnic background, because that shows a deceptive and sneaky personality imo.

Yeah. As far as Russian names go, I like Ruslan, Ludmila, Dominika, and Radimir tons... especially pronounced with the right accent.
However, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be named something that wasn't either common on people of heavily mixed heritage, or connected to my own heritage pretty naturally. Because people often ask about names, and if I was Ludmila, having to tell any Russians that my parents 'just liked it' wouldn't be terribly comfy for me. So I probably wouldn't name my own kid that way. - chazda"I don't want to look like a loser for the rest of my life!" ~ Georgia Ford, on needing a signature

I love Irish names myself. I wish I was Irish!! Ive asked everyone in my family if there was even a little bit of Irish in me and much to my dissapointment theres not so I know how you feel!! My bf has a tiny bit in him though so at least our kids will have a little bit in them which makes me a little bit happier!!But I love Aiden!!No I dont think that its wierd to use names that are not from your etnicity (spelling?). I think if oyu love the name you should use it no matter what. I mean even names like Aiden are not English or American and still it is one of the most popular names out there. So if you love Svetlana use it. And if it becomes a hassle and people make fun or something like that theres always the great nn Lana!!

Juan? Wait, he could be from-Spain-Spanish... I actually know a Catalina Maria who's blonde and looks throughly white who has that explanation... I don't mind it at all. I guess it's inevitable; the world's getting bigger. (insert something clever here)

Maybe you could adopt? I don't know, it seems maybe a little odd for certain names. Maybe a middle name would be acceptable. Hey maybe even your pets. Names that I like, but for some reason I couldn't use I name my pets that. I really like my pets, so it works for me. Hope my rambling made sense.

I like Russian names as well. I do like Svetlana and Katya. Also Galina and Sasha (a Russian NN for Alexandra).
I don't see anything wrong with using them as long as you love them and they don't sound atrocious with your LN.
