Its a big name in my family but hasnt been used since my grandmothers brother and my grandfathers uncle.Do you see it as trashy? Pretentious? etc...I really love the nick name Archie but i dont think i like the full name.

I think it's most unappealing. I see "bald" in Archibald and the TV character Archie Bunker in the nickname.

Hey there! Archibald sounds like a very serious, formal, stick-up-the-butt (hope that doesn't offend anyone) kind of person. It is kind of cool though. A couple of months ago I met a little two year old boy named Archibald who goes by Archie. I thought it was pretty cute.

I think Archibald is great, and very uncommon nowadays. I love the nn Archie, too.Shannon

I had a teacher named Archibald my sophomore year in High School. (I won't tell you how long ago it was! LOL) I can say he was the nerdiest, dumbest man I have ever laid eyes on. The poor man fell pray to every well known prank ever pulled (sitting on tacks....etc) He was ridiculed severely by students. When called by his first name by a student he turned turned scarlet red and the veins would litterally pop out of his neck. He had his gradebook spit in, my own brother locked him the supply closet (four years after I had him as a teacher). He poor man hadn't a clue. Because of this teacher I can't see torturing another poor soul with this name. :o( Sorry.

I do see it as very dated, and unless you used the nn Archie, I think it'd seem pretentious - much to big for a little boy and even a young man.

I like the name, but then again I like older style names. I like the nn Archie. At least in Australia Archibald is asociated with a good Portrait arts prize. This Message Is Proudly Sponsored By Underground AirwaysAnthony

I think Archibald is a very weak sounding name. And God forbid he ever goes bald. Since it's a family name, then I'd say use it as a middle name.Lissa Hannah

Well, it was Cary Grant's real name and he recovered nicely. ;-) I kind of like it but I would never have the guts to use it as a first name. As a middle name, it would be nice.-Emily

His recovery...He recovered nicely because he went by Cary Grant in Hollywood - not Archibald Alexander Leach. But who knows if he recovered nicely, because recall the quote, "Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant." :)Lissa Hannah

I think it's awesome. It's got real character to it, especially in comparison to overused classics like James, and Archie makes a great nickname. It's neither pretentious nor trashy--just historical and currently underused in America.Plus, it makes me think of Horatio Hornblower, which is NEVER a bad thing. ;)Array
