pronunciation of Mireille

Hi! I think Mireille is such a pretty, pretty name. Is it pronounced me-RAY? That's my guess at it. I think it's so pretty like that. Can someone tell me if I'm right or not? Too bad most people wouldn't be able to pronounce it... and I don't think Mirae, Meray, Mirhea, Mirea, Mirey, etc are options, either (though of them I think Mirea is prettiest... Not that anyone would be able to pronounce that, either! Agh!). What are your thoughts on Mireille?

I would have thought you would pronounce it Meer-e-al. I guess I'm wrong, but that's how it looks.

I've never heard of the name, so I've never heard it pronounced, but I would say Mir-ee-el (Mir rhyming with fur). I don't care for that pronunciation, or me-RAY, and I think it looks jumbled.

Yep, definitely MeerAY.It is very pretty. I first heard it on a sweet little Yorkshire Terrier whose teeth I cleaned when I worked at the vet clinic. I'll never forget that, because the dog aspirated as it was recovering and I felt so guilty. (She was fine though.) I think the name is too nice for a dog.I think if you spell it Mireille, most people will get the prn right -- even folks at the clinic seemed to pick it up fast, and some of them were numskulls. If not, I think the best Anglicized spelling would be Mirae, as far as the prn being intuitive. - chazda

I thought it was more like meh-RAY-ah. Not positive, though. Well, I did a little research, and most people say it's Mi-RAY. I just thought I'd heard it pronounced another way a few times. :b

Hi there! I know someone whose daughter is named Mireya and it's pronounced the way you said. I think Mireya is pretty, too, but I prefer Mireille. Thanks for your response!

I like Mireille very much, but had to be told how to pronounce it, at first. If pronunciation is a concern, you could always use Mirei. Since Mireille comes from Mireio, anyway, Mirei could be a legitimate form.Shannon

I pronounce it me-RAY too. I first encounter this name at namenerds.com in a list of suggested alternatives to popular mns, and the pronunciation was listed beside it (http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/) -- look for alternatives to Marie.~ Arcadia
