[Opinions] Re: Birth Announcements today
in reply to a message by Monkey
Well, I like a few alright..
Jessica Jane
Alana Monique
Max (I hope RJ stands for something)
Sophie
Jack Steven
Lachlan Adam
Halle Grace
Jay
Daniel & Georgia
Ruby. Barclay must mean something to them..
Milla
Drew
Mitchell (but not Kyan much)
Martina. Leeup must mean something to them..
Valentin (but not Jaz)
Harrison's not so bad as a fn since H. Ford, but.. well, it's in my family, so to speak.
Emerald Rose sounds like a phrase .. Emerald Green Rose?
Nixon - good grief! Will we be naming kids Bush in another 30 years?
Oakleigh - these people are just nothing like me, I guess. Maybe I don't get out enough to keep up with fashion, but gosh, that's really ugly.
Stella Mae isn't too bad.
If I never saw the middle name Grace again, I'd really be just fine.

Lol... I know!
Worst thing is, these announcements are from AUSTRALIA!!!
I am constantly abhorred by the Americanisation of our culture.
All these Madisons, Dakotas, Montanas and Indianas...
When will it stop?!!
Nothing against the US, but I think each country should be proud of their own culture, and if you must borrow from another at least make sure it's part of your heritage...

Where in Australia are these from? I'm halfway through writing a post of today's from the Sydney Morning Herald :-)
heh.. yeah .. but you can't preserve any culture against the New World Order. This is the Borg Collective. Prepare to be assimilated. You will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
:-D

[edited to add, I'm being ironic - for anyone who perhaps didn't figure that out .. I know you're out there.]

Actually...
The usual maxim is, in its entirety, thus:
"We are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile."
Alternately, in Star Trek: First Contact, it's:
"We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."
(Incidentally, the Borg Queen was first seen in First Contact. Perhaps she was a new Queen who wanted to spice up the old motto a little. ;-))
And finally, Jean-Luc Picard said as Locutus:
"I am Locutus of Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. You will disarm your weapons and escort us to Sector 001 [Earth]. If you attempt to intervene, we will destroy you."
The Borg pronounce "futile" few-TILE (few-TIE-ul?), except for Seven of Nine, who pronounces it FEW-tul. To Jeri Ryan's credit, she asked about the pronunciation after watching several episodes about the Borg for research into her character, but she was told FEW-tul was correct. So she said FEW-tul and promptly got lots of mail complaining about her mispronunciation. I can't recall right now if anyone (the writers or Ryan herself) subsequently corrected the error.

I knew I could count on you for that :-)
I was pretty sure I didn't have it quite right.
