[Facts] Alexei ... proper pronunciation of son's name
My husband and I have decided to name our son Alexei, after The Brothers Karamazov. Problem is we are arguing over how to pronounce the name. And, is Alexei the common, proper spelling in Russia, or a highly unusual variation? Please help! We want our son to be named properly.

I think it's more commonly written Aleksei, and prononced al-ehk (like in men, pet)-say.

LOLMy nephew was also named out of the book. They weren't as brave as you, though. They gave him a common first name, and used Alyosha as his middle name.Siri

I dont know too much Russian, but I would assume it is a-lehk-sey.
Since Russian is writen with a different writing system, there are many variations of this name in the Roman alphabet. Others I've seen are: Aleksei, Alexej, and Aleksej, all possible forms of Alexei.

And in additionAleksei is from Alexius. Another version of Alexius is Alexis, which was--and still is, in many countries--100% male originally. The female form of Alexius / Alexis in English is Alexia, but unfortunately that's also the medical term for a reading disorder (similar to, but not the same as, dyslexia), albeit through a different etymology.Miranda
