Opi does mean "opening, hole" in Greek, which has created some confusion regarding Kalliope's etymology.
In fact however, Kalliope is derived from kali ("beautiful")and the noun "ops" (voice). The feminine dative of "ops" is "opi".
Homer uses both word "opi" and "kali" in a different context in Odyssey 10.221. "Kirkes aidouses opi kalei", i.e., "Circe sings with a beautiful voice".
