This won't be the final list . . .
. . . given that there's still repeats in it (the repeats of Chloe and Zoe will be because some parents use accents on the 'e' and some don't; they'll get sorted together later). The mistypes of MiKayla and MaKayla will also get ironed out (they're almost exclusively spelled Mikayla and Makayla; the capitalisation is a minority thing).
No really big surprises there, but since I'm a) Western Australian, and b) closely familiar with last year's list, that's not really a surprise. I was pleasantly surprised to see Leah ranking so highly - I wonder where that came from? - and it's refreshing to see Stella creeping up the list.
I like:
Olivia
Charlotte
Mia (well, it's my older cat's name, anyway)
Hannah
Emma (my little step-first-cousin-once-removed was one of this year's Emmas in WA)
Jasmine (too overused but I like it in theory)
Hayley

I have a 25 year old friend whose parents named her Sienna after the paint colour... now she's heart broken that her name is so common too!
Great list, by the way, but it makes me realise how common some (no, most!) of my favourites are.

Mostly typical & what I would have expected, but I singled out a few that caught my attention.
Sienna
This seems to be the new S-name of choice. I find it new & refreshing. Probably the influence of Sienna Miller. Really growing on me.
Indiana
Would have expected this in America, but not in Australia. Is Indiana destined to be the new Isabella? I love the combo Indiana Rose.
Charlize
Being from South Africa I'm chuffed to see this.
Poppy
I find this so cute, but I always thought it was an acquired taste. I never thought it would become popular.
Tara
I find this so striking. I really prefer it to Lara & the like.
Alice
It seems like Alice is making a welcome comeback.
Angelina
Obviously the influence of the famous Hollywood actress. I really like the sound. It's so much more appealing than Angela and the like.
Eliza
Very traditional in a good way. It reminds me of Jane Austen. Although I love Elizabeth. This is a welcome change.
Asha
I have been hearing Asher on boys lately. At first I didn't like it, but it has been growing on me lately. I can't help but wonder if Asha is a spin-off from Asher.
:o)

Asha isn't a spin-off from Asher. Asha was slightly popular for girls in the 1980s, and Australia is currently seeing a slight resurgence of some popular 80s names, no doubt as the current wave of new parents are naming their children after their friends. Asha also combines the popular Ash- sound with the popular -a ending, so it's perfect for the current naming climate.
Indiana is popular because anything associated with the US is popular amongst the working and welfare classes. There's lots of little Dakotas running around too.

Thank you
That was very informative. Now I can place these names in the proper context.

I was reading a book about Jacob (Israel) and all of his sons and his daughter. When Asher was born the book said he was named after the goddess Asha, which was a big joke among the wives because Asha was a patron of women and the like. I don't know if this is true or not (I would guess not) but I thought you might find it interesting. The book was "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant.

I first heard of Asha on a girl before i ever heard it on a boy so i actually like it for both sexes, but Asha for a girl and Asher for a boy
It seems to me that Ella is a really popular name in most countries in the Western world. Personally I'm sick of Emma. It is always in the top 10 in Sweden. Always.
I was surprised to find Imogen on the list. I thought that was a name for "old people". I also think it's nice to see Jorja on the list. A name I'm liking more and more.

Interesting! I had no idea some of these - Tahlia, Skye, Indiana, Charlize, Bianca, Eliza, Monique - were so popular down under. I wonder if Charlize was used before the rise of Charlize Theron, or if it's a symptom of her fame?
Several of the popular names - Makayla spelt this way, Brianna, Dakota and Savannah, I thought were purely American territory, possibly Canadian too. There are also many shared favourites with Britain, like Sophie and Holly, so it's an interesting mix.
I always think of Australia as having a strong tradition of Scottish names, but the girls' list doesn't reflect that. The boys' list does, with Lachlan, Liam, Connor, Declan, Aiden and Callum all popular. Lachlan is much more popular with the Aussies than it is with us! Thanks for sharing :-)
