[Opinions] Elspeth.
I'm on the fence with this name. Part of me likes it, part me doesn't. I'd probably use it as a middle name, for example, Bridget Elspeth. Its a Scottish form of Elizabeth. There was a character in Anne of Green Gables, and I fell in love with it.So opinions? COuld it even work as a first name? What type of person do you see with the name? (I see the character) Siri

I love it :-)I've always liked it - one of my favourite combos when I was going through a Scotophile stage was Isobel Mary Elspeth.Bridget Elspeth is lovely. In which AoGG book was there an Elspeth? I can't remember and I *hate* not being able to remember things! :-D

I cannot remember the book exactlyBut I think it would have been three or four, when ANne was living in the big house with the tower. I should re-read them.Siri

I've got the whole series sitting next to my computer :-D - I've been slowly working on three fanfic books to come after Rilla of Ingleside. That'd be Anne of Windy Willows that you're thinking of - one of the characters is the little girl Elizabeth who calls herself all sorts of nicknames, maybe Elspeth was one of them. I might have to re-read them too! :-)

Personally, I think it has an ugly sound to it. I much prefer Elizabeth.

I actually know a woman called Elspeth. It suits her, and made me quite like the name. However, she is a very serious woman, severely short hair, and not much of a sence of humour... Then again she is a lawyer.

I love Elspeth.. it is very Scottish sounding to me, but I've always preferred it to Elizabeth. I can see it on a Scottish character or woman for sure. I think it makes a more interesting name or mn than Elizabeth, even for someone who isn't Scottish.I picture (this is influenced by a character I read once) a gentle, genteel, pale & wispy person, a homebody and bookworm with a generous spirit. - chazda

I don't like it. Actually, I thought it was a bit funny to discover that it was an actual name, because "Elspeth" is exactly how people say my name (Elisabeth) when they're speaking quickly or just being verbally lazy; it annoys the heck out of me.

Personally, I adore this name. ^.^ I think it would make a wonderful first name; I picture an Elspeth as being intelligent and creative, with long flowing hair.

I LOVE this name. I see an older woman since the only person I know called Elspeth is an older woman that works at the school my mum worked at before I was born. It's great though, I love it.

I like it a lot. It reminds me of Elisabeth (which I love, spelled with an 's'), but is much more unusual. I think Elspeth could work just fine as fn, possibly with the nns Elsie or Elsa. It's great that Elspeth rules out the nn Beth, which I hate. I think an Elspeth would be somewhat quiet, but very intelligent and confident- possibly a slightly chubby girl with big, soft curls.Shannon

I really like the name, too, but I also prefer it as a mn. A name I love is Maeve Elspeth. Elizabeth is so pretty, but also very common so I think Elspeth is a way to use it and "spice" it up at the same time, so to speak.
