Help[Opinions] WDYT Twin names and other
I was listening to a audio book where the main character is called Alais. And in another there was an old Lord called Gervase. WDYT to both? Alais is very nice imo and Gervase is unusual, but kind of cool in an old-fashioned way.
Also, what do you think about twins named
Annie & Lennox (after Annie Lennox)
Alice & Emma (German woman rights activist and her magazine)
Linnea & Linus
Hedwig & Minna (two German feminists)
Rosa (Rozalie) & Clara (Rosa Luxemberg and Clara Zetkin, founders of the "Internationale group" later: " Spartacist League)
Rosa and Karl (Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht, founders of the "Internationale group" later: " Spartacist League)

Unless there is something cheesy about this combination which I don't see.
Obviously the parents of the other twins never frequent baby names boards.
But the worst are Handsome and Good-looking. Those names are bad even when the twins are not together. Unless they are Indians, living in a reserve and such names are part of their culture.

- Racial? She is Swedish!
- Maybe he called her Meatball.

Donovan Bailey was a famous olympic runner, I believe.
Handsome and Good-lookin are not Natives and there is no special cultural thing going on.... unless you count urban Detroit culture, where some people wouldn't bat an eye at a boy named Handsome Guy. I'm sure he'll be in school with kids named BigBoy and Anferny and Jermajesty. (BTW, there was a kid named BigBoy at my mom's hospital)

What does Anferny mean?
I realize that Jermajesty is a twist on "Your Majesty". Sounds very weird to me.

He was. He won the gold a couple times, I believe. He's Canadian, so it's mostly Canadians who remember him. But I'd assume someone in Michigan would also have heard of him at one point or another, what with the close proximity to Ontario and all.

I like Gervase, and I think that Alais and Gervase would be good names for twins. I also like Alys, an old spelling of Alice.

Linnea & Linus: Looks very similar but do not sound so in English. In Swedish they are too similar, since both are pronounced with the "lin"-sound (not "line").

The twin names I put down aren't necessary twin names I would use, I agree with having non-matching names, only if they were really subtle.
I think German is similar in pronouncing some of these names to Swedish, Linus and Linnea would be a no go, definantly!
Btw, I didn't think of Alais and Gervase as twin names. :-)

Annie & Lennox - if you are a fan, why not
Alice & Emma - the names are okay but I wouldn't name anyone after Alice Schwarzer
Linnea & Linus - too close
Hedwig & Minna - very very oldfashioned, but maybe the names will have a comeback

No thanks, I absolutely hate Eva Hermann. She's crazy in my opinion. And of course, being a girl, I'm not against feminism. I just don't like Alice Schwarzer. And personally I wouldn't read her magazine. Do you read it? I think her time is long gone. We girls don't need anyone to defend our rights anymore.

Hm, I don't think she defends 'our' rights, they are hers too and if you read her magazine you would notice why there is still the need to work towards equality. It might not be a problem for middle class Germans, but eg what about the Turkish woman in Kreuzberg?
They definantly don't have equality. Or what about all the other countries other than Western Europe and America?
You should look through the Emma, maybe you would find something interessting in it, feminism isn't just heavy old lesbian ladies with short hair and purple clothes who hate men. :-)

I'm not sure how Alais is pronounced - is it like uh-LACE? ah-la-EES? I don't like it either way, but especially the second way. It's just too hard to enunciate all those vowels as separate syllables! Gervase is okay, but I'm a little surprised to hear that you see as it old-fashioned because I've always thought of it as a quite modern name that would be primarily used by black Americans. Admittedly, I don't know the history of its usage, but that's my first impression.
Annie & Lennox (after Annie Lennox) - Is Lennox on a boy or a girl? Either way I don't like the name too much. Annie is cute as a nickname for Anne, Anna, Annabelle, etc., but I wouldn't use it on its own. Here, the Annie Lennox connection is pretty obvious, and that's a little over-the-top.

Hedwig & Minna (two German feminists) - For me, Hedwig is too associated with Harry Potter's owl to be usable. Of course, this may not matter nearly as much in Germany if Hedwig is still a commonly used or at least a familiar name. Nevertheless, I rank Hedwig right up near the top of my list of world's ugliest names. Minna is cute.

I don't care for either Alais or Gervaise. As for twin names I like: Alice & Emma, Rosa & Clara, and Rosalie and Mathilda.
