At 55, Jack has begun stepping back from the day-to-day demands of ranching, leaving much of the physical labor and management to Bo. His role is now more advisory, and he spends his days repairing tools and maintaining the land. Though his health is generally good, Jack is beginning to feel the wear of his years and is planning to leave the ranch to Bo when the time comes.

Connie's school has grown to include multiple classrooms and teachers. She is increasingly sought after for her counsel on education, occasionally traveling to nearby towns to speak at gatherings. Bo has taken over much of the ranch's operations, and he is now considered one of the region’s most promising young ranchers. Him and Angela have been married for three years. They live in a small house on the ranch property. Angela assists bookkeeping for the ranch and occasionally steps in to help at Connie's school. Her and Bo are beginning to think about starting a family of their own, though they are in no rush. Sally has fulfilled her dream of pursuing higher education and recently graduated from a teacher's college in San Francisco. She has returned home temporarily, taking up a position at her mother’s school while deciding on her next steps. She is already considering moving back to the city to advocate for women's and workers' rights. She has become engaged to a young lawyer she met while studying in San Francisco. Originally from Massachusetts, he focuses his work on labour rights and tenant protections. Though he was initially worried about fitting into Sally's tight-knit family, his charm, intelligence, and earnest nature quickly won over the Castañedas. He frequently visits the ranch, assisting with legal matters. The wedding is planned for the following spring. Zeke has grown into a skilled mechanic and inventor, with a small workshop on the ranch where he repairs tools and experiments with new designs. He dreams of traveling to San Francisco like his sister, to study mechanics and engineering. His sweetheart is the daughter of a local Mexican-American family who own a modest vineyard nearby. While they are not yet officially engaged, their relationship is serious, and she has become a frequent guest at the ranch. Mimi spends much of her time painting and writing. Her work has begun to attract local attention, and she recently sold her first painting to a merchant in town. Maggie's love for animals and the land has sparked an interest in veterinary work, though such opportunities for formal training are rare in the region.Ike is a lively and curious boy eager to learn from his older siblings, often shadowing Zeke in his workshop or following Bo around the ranch. He loves entertaining his family with tales he invents or embellishes.
