I don't see why it's not usable. I find it more approachable than most male Latin *ius/us names, including somewhat common ones like Julius, Augustus, Maximus. I don't expect confusion about pronunciation or spelling where I live like I would for Marius, Cassius, Lucius, Aemilius, Aurelius (and Dmitri, etc). It's not as fusty as Cornelius or as serious as Octavius. It shortens to Demetri or D, if one wants (though I am called by a 4-syllable name, and I think the length is fine).
