[Test] How does one perform a search for missing pronunciations?
Hello everyone,
I seem to vaguely remember that there has been a thread about this before (a few years ago or so), but I haven't had any luck with digging it up via the board's search function. It's possible that it has been removed, or maybe I just misremembered.
Anyway, I would like to know how (if possible) one can run a search for name entries that don't have a pronunciation added yet. I've already experimented with the 'Sound and syllables'-section of the search function, but so far, I haven't succeeded in getting it to do that. :(
If someone here happens to know how it ought to be done, then I would appreciate it very much if you could let me know. Thank you in advance for your time! ♥
Greetings,
Lucille
P.S.: At the same time, I also secretly wonder if it's possible to search for entries that have an "informal" pronunciation added, but not the IPA-pronunciation yet. For that, the search function has to be able to distinguish between "informal" pronunciation and IPA-pronunciation, I imagine. It doesn't seem like it can, but I could easily be wrong, hence my still wondering about it.

Hi Lucille, you can try this:
1. turn on the advanced search options
2. search for pronunciations that are NOT * (the * matches anything)
3. select the checkbox "negative matches include missing pronunciations"
4. you will probably want to narrow by selecting a pronunciation language and a usage
Here is a search for Spanish names that do not have a Spanish pronunciation:
https://www.behindthename.com/names/browse.php?operator_usage=is&value_usage[]=spanish&operator_sound=isnot&value_sound[]=%2A&langoperator_sound=is&lang_sound[]=spanish&incnopron_sound=1
You can apply this same search to the user-submitted collection of names by using the link near the bottom of the page.
To answer your P.S., if you check the "search IPA" checkbox when doing this search, you will get names that are missing IPA. (This will always be a superset of the original search, since all names that have an IPA pronunciation also have a simplified pronunciation.) Unfortunately there is no way to search for names that have a simplified pronunciation AND do NOT have an IPA pronunciation, except by comparing the results of the two searches.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a clear and detailed explanation! I made sure to save it, in case I end up forgetting about it at some point. O_o
Meanwhile, I've already been putting it to good use and added some missing pronunciations. Being able to filter like this really makes the whole process considerably smoother, as I don't have to check each individual entry in order to see whether it already has a pronunciation or not. Yay! \o/
