I immediately thought they were a sibset. Emily would be the more polite, approachable and caring sister. Vanessa would be the older one. She's nowhere near as nice, but has refined taste and a lot of self-confidence.
The names don't match each other in style. Emily seems like one of those classic, timeless names whereas Vanessa seems like a fad in spite of its long usage. I've never liked Vanessa but I've always liked Emily.
