[Opinions] Emily & Vanessa
Replies
These names are both very common in my generation, but I love them both very much...I always have. In fact, Vanessa is one of the names I'd consider for a daughter. Emily gives classic vibes, and apart from thinking of the 2000s, I think of Victorian America. Vanessa has always reminded me of butterflies, long before I knew the meaning (a Vanessa that I grew up with loved butterflies. She always wore butterfly barrettes and had butterfly backpacks. She even liked to put butterfly stickers on her sneakers).
Emily-I picture her being very nice and I like the name.
Vanessa-I think of her being very confident and dying her hair. I don’t like it, but I don’t hate it.

I don't like Emily. It calls to mind a prissy, teacher's-pet kind of girl who is always conspicuously going after extra credit and making a big show of reading obscure classics.
Vanessa is totally different. I thik of a Vanessa as a glamorous, sophisticated young woman who has clothes for every possible occasion and who is the life and soul of any event she goes to.

Love both
I like both names and I think they go well together even though they're different styles.
Emily - a pretty brunette, friendly, amiable, studious, girl-next-door
Vanessa - beautiful, glamorous, ambitious, leader of the cool girls in high school. For some reason, I see her with luscious red hair and green eyes.

Emily’s boring but harmless. I think Vanessa’s pretty and sassy. I wouldn’t expect these together in a sibset since Vanessa has much more personality.
I immediately thought they were a sibset. Emily would be the more polite, approachable and caring sister. Vanessa would be the older one. She's nowhere near as nice, but has refined taste and a lot of self-confidence.
The names don't match each other in style. Emily seems like one of those classic, timeless names whereas Vanessa seems like a fad in spite of its long usage. I've never liked Vanessa but I've always liked Emily.

Emily is a family name going back to the 19th century. I would happily have used it as a fn before it went popular; Alice Emily sounds good to me.
I was at school with a Vanessa who was pleasant but unremarkable. Then I knew a Vanessa at uni who was tiny, beautiful and very nice: a good friend dated her and they were an excellent pair, but her parents suddenly took her out of that university and sent her to another one far away, having found out (not that it was ever a secret!) that he belonged to a different religion from them. This has left me with a very positive impression of the name but also a whole lot of sadness and anger. Not that it's got anything to do with the name, but I can't help remembering the situation.
