[Opinions] The downfall of Ella
Any idea why Ella fell so very quickly?
It was so well liked and seen as a modern classic. It was at its highest, #12, 12 years ago, but still at #13 in 2019.
In just 5 years it fell all the way from #13 to #32. I find this interesting, given that other names that became popular at the same time are still doing so well, such as Isabella, Sophia, Olivia, Evelyn, Ava.
Any ideas why? Do you like Ella? I think it's pretty.

Personally I'm a bit surprised it got as popular as it did. I certainly never considered it a modern classic - rather an older name that got an interesting second wind as a 21st century trend name. Yes, Ella doesn't fit the typical "trendy" vibe, as it does have more substantial history, but particularly in a moment of time where names like Eleanor and Isabella - two very Ella-ish names - have such popularity, Ella by virtue is insubstantial, a fine nickname but not one to stand alone.
Personally I do wish Ella's demise would have brought back a resurgence of Ellen. I quite like the name Ellen.

I would like Ella more if it wasn't Spanish for "she/her" (btw my dyslexia originally decided to type that as snapish lmao) It wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't regularly around Spanish speakers and hear it. I'm not opposed to names that mean woman or girl, like Donna or Nina. I like Nina a fair amount actually, but Ella is more directly tied to pronoun use. Ellie is more my speed for the shorter El names, maybe Elle if I am feeling adventurous. I do like the connection to the book Ella Enchanted. It is a pinnacle for my childhood and I occasionally revisit it on audible.
I think Ella is awful as a given name, but fine as a nickname. I’m personally glad it’s falling.
Maybe it's an oversaturation of a group of similar names - Ella, Emma, Isabella, Isabelle, and Emily. When you compare Ella and Emma, you'll see that their rise and fall patterns are very similar although Ella has shadowed Emma's popularity. Olivia, Ava, and Sophia don't have as many similar names, so they don't have as much competition.
I think names like Ella and Bella are so short and simple that people prefer them as nicknames.
It’s very plain and more of a nickname/name part than any of the others you mentioned.
It's just part of the cycle. Ella was in the Top 20 in the 1880s as well, then began to fall until it dropped off completely. It's starting its death process again. People are getting sick of late Victorian classics. But it'll be back in 100 years I'm sure.
Ella is a pretty simple name and it feels slightly derivative of other similar names that are still/getting popular, so that's probably why it's dropping faster.
