Dick being taken over by slang is tragic because the name on its own, without current associations, sounds like a very humble but tough, sturdy name. Kind of like a classic cowboy. I can see the appeal. Plus I am a big Batman fan and Dick Grayson (Robin/Nightwing) is my favorite character of them all, which definitely puts this name in a positive light for me. I'm also fond of Dick Powell, who was a 30's to 50's era actor in black and white movies.
Such a shame.
Such a shame.
Oh my god, I can't believe Titty used to be a name.
Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons books, written in the 1930s, has a character known as Titty: the explanations range from 'Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse' (another kids' book) to 'Scottish for Sister - Titty instead of Sissy'. More recent versions of the stories have changed it to either Tatty or Kitty. Mercifully, there wasn't a character named Richard and known as Dick!
