Eugene is better, but it's not bad. I think it sounds more like a girl name though because of Jean. Where I'm from at least, they sound exactly the same.

Meh, I mainly think about the unit of heredity; I prefer Gina on a girl, instead of Gene (on a boy).

I enjoy it mostly as a guilty pleasure name. On a human I think it's fine. I'd use it on a pet as a nickname for Eugene or Imogene. I have family history with the name Eugene but it is many generations back.

If I had to use this name I would use Eugene nn Gene rather than Gene as a fn.

Don't like it at all

When I was with my ex, we had decided to name a boy Gene if we ever had kids. I remember being SO excited that he was into a crusty old name like Gene. A miracle! Apparently it was actually a fandom name of some guy from an anime? I didn't care.

I still like Gene even though that relationship didn't work out. Gene is so dorky and serious, it's adorable.

It's a nice grandpa-type of name, but I don't actually like it for a young person. I also don't like that it sounds exactly the same as Jean for a girl.
