I've always found it rather odd to consider Gail as a nickname for Abigail. I mean, it's logical, and Abigail is certainly an old enough name for it to make sense, but every Gail I've known has been named simply Gail (or Gayle - don't know that I've met a Gale).I love the name Abigail, truly, but I also find it boring. So if a kid goes by a different nickname other than Abby, that's fine with me.

I have a soft spot for Gail because of someone I know, but I think it is still too dated for a kid.
I've never met a Gail who used it as a nickname for Abigail, just people with the full name Gail (also Gale and Gayle).
I like the idea of Abigail 'Gail', but it would have to be a conscious choice by the person and not just something contrived by the parents. Like, Abigail would have to pick Gail after realizing how common Abby was, and she'd have to have a more serious personality to pick Gail over the popular and 'cute' default nickname of Abby.

I’ve always like the name, Gail, in its various spellings — Gayle/Gale. It seems fresh and breezy —maybe like a gale force wind!

It's okay for middle name but I prefer Abigail but unfortunately is similar sounding for 'jail'.

I don't like Abigail as an extension of Gail. Abby / Abbie is fine to me.

Gail still feels incredibly old laydish to me and unattractive. I know it's getting traction and I won't be the popular opinion. But to me it is just frumpy and ugly. It's the name I would use for myself online as a teen when creepy guys I didn't know would ask me my name. After I told them "Gail" they would assume I was unattractive and leave me alone, lol! I'm not gonna lie: it worked incredibly well as creep repellant.

Great. I like Gail and kinda dislike Abby.
I really like Gail as a stand-alone name.
I had a good friend named Gayle in middle school. We might have bonded over having dated names for our age (I can't remember, and I doubt it, but it could've happened).

Sorry, Mirfak, it wasn't meant as a reply to you. Should have been just a generalised bit of burble under the main heading. I haven't had my morning coffee yet: that must be the reason!

I've always liked Gail. However, I've also always disliked Abigail, and Abby is trite as well as being a very large church. I've never actually met an Abigail, with or without a nn.
