I think Van is alright, but because it's part of surnames, it is kind of awkward.
I dislike Vance. It sounds smug, brandnamey, aggressive. Smacks of the word "advance"
I can picture a weightlifting gym named Vance Fitness with a parking lot full of pickups and Hummers, more easily than I can picture a little boy named Vance.

My favorite masculine V names:
Vincent, Victor, Vaughn (which slightly suffers from the same issue as Van, because it sounds just like Von in my accent), Valentine, Virgil.

Vance is evergreen and refreshing, whereas Van is bland.

Vincent, Victor, Virgil, Valentino and last but not least - Vernon. I think this name doesn't deserve that much hate.

I shudder at the name Van thanks to the character from Reba, so Vance it is.
It's not too bad either, I've warmed up to Lance lately.

Where I live, there are a lot of originally Dutch surnames many of which start with Van or Van Der; so Van could never be anything other than a nn to me. Vance, then, though I don't find it appealing.

Victor is a family name, so I'm happy with it. I don't enjoy other male V names; Vernon is probably the least worst.
