Very interesting, as usual, and very, very American! I've never seen Trey, or a reerence to it, in any other context - have you?

Well, here is an example of a Canadian hockey player called Trey:https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/270016/trey-watsonAnd although Trey obviously started in the USA and so far I don't know of examples born outside North America, I would be surprised if there were absolutely no small boys named Trey in other English-speaking countries because of the use of the name in shows like "Sex and the City" which I believe have some international exposure.

Some late 18th-early 19th century English poet/writer, maybe Charles Lamb, had a pet rabbit or hare named Tray - that spelling; that's the closest I've come. I'll try and trace the reference.
