[Facts] My column on Maria
For some reason the World Herald did not put up my column from December 5 up on their Omaha.com website until an hour ago, 8 days late. Here it finally is:https://omaha.com/lifestyles/cleveland-evans-in-song-or-in-prayer-maria-is-beloved-by-many/article_5fe3ba92-5c2f-11ec-9d4d-0b425972e9af.htmlThis was of course one of those names where I had a lot more material than I could fit into 550 words. I will probably write separate columns on Mary, Marie, and Mariah at some point in the future.

I think its popularity is definitely related to its religious connect, at least for most people. I tend to associate Maria with Latin populations. Mary, with English. Marie with French, Creole, and Cajun. Mariah is just too Mariah Carey for me. As a native English speaker, Mary has been ran into the ground, all the way to the very core of this planet. I don't hate it but OMG is it boring or what now?!I think it's a tie between Marie and Maria for me. I don't really like or dislike either one. They're just kind of there, a safe bet.

Fascinating, as always - thank you! I look forward to Mary, Marie and Mariah: and I might mention that in South Africa Maria has been a popular name in Afrikaans for centuries, and it typically shortens to Marie, which is pronounced MAH-ri. Compounds like Anne-Marie, however, have the m'REE pronunciation: usually but not always used by English speakers.
