[Opinions] Tagging threads
I'm going to write up some guidelines for tagging next week. It's intended to be similar to the tagging system for the names in the database, but I'm curious to see how it evolves.
In the meantime here are some quick guidelines:
- the tags for a thread can be edited by others; the OP gets to set the tags originally, but other veteran members (been here for 6 months with regular logins) can set them later; the OP does not have "ownership" of the tags in any way
- you are encouraged to fix bad tags
- jokey tags are not helpful and not allowed
- there is an edit trail; currently I can see who has made changes to the tags; soon other members will be able to see too
- you can only edit tags of other people's posts if you are a veteran member in good standing; if you disregard the rules, an admin could remove your account's good standing flag
- names make good tags; eventually it would be neat to link names in the database to all the threads about them
- tags should not be too broad (e.g. "names") or too narrow. Try to find the sweet spot!
- try to reuse tags. Type a few letters into the input field to see existing tags that start with those letters.
- proper nouns should be capitalized, initialisms should be all-caps (e.g. "CAF"), otherwise use small caps.
- do not enter your username as a tag. I suppose the only reason to enter a username would be if the thread is specifically about the user in question.
