[Opinions] Frances/ Francis
Firstly what do you think of Frances/ Francis? Do you prefer it on a boy or girl better or equally? I think I like it both ways, and particularly with the nn Frankie. (Again for both boys and girls!)
Secondly, the reason I was thinking of it was that I met a family today. The mother was called Frances Catherine, the daughter Alice Rose and the son was Francis Jack. This seemed a bit strange to me. I've heard of fathers and sons sharing the same name, and mothers and daughters, but not mothers and sons! I suppose it is an interesting idea, but it doesn't appeal to me at this moment, although actually I'm not a big fan of "Juniors" anyway.

I like both equallyI used to not like Frances on a girl as much as Francis on a boy, but the former name's since grown on me.

Francis is a boy name. Frances is a girl name. Personally, I prefer it on a boy, just called by Francis. I don't like Frank or Frankie or Fran as nns.

I like Francis for boys and Frances for girls. I kind of prefer both as mn's, though. I actually would rather the son or daughter be named after the mother than for a son to be just plain "Jr." And that's just because it's so common, and it's nice and refreshing to see a mom named Frances and her son, Francis, imo at least. :) But it would get quite confusing, so I like to keep parent-honoring-names as mn's.

I love Francis on a boy and Frances on a girl, just the way it's supposed to be. Would hate Francis on a girl or vice cersa, though. Frankie is an OK nn for either, though I personally would prefer both Franics and Frances without nicknames. I don't find mother and son having a similar name any more bizarre than father and sons or mothers and daughters sharing a name, especially since Francis and Frances are not the exact same name, but the masculine and feminine forms of the name. I even pronounce them differently.

I adore the names Frances for a girl and Francis for a boy.Frank is a nice nn for a boy, but I prefer Francie / Franny for a girl.I don't see a problem with naming a son after the mother. It's very refreshing, to me.

Hmm, nobody else seems to find naming a son after their mother strange except me. I don't know why I don't like it, I don't really like any "Junior" names and to me this just seems far fetched. At least she used the correct spelling, though!
Would you pronounce Francie, Fran-see, or the same as Frankie, only spelled differently?

"Fran-see" -- rhymes with fancy.I suppose I don't have as much a problem with "junior" names because parents go by "Mom" or "Dad" (or equivalents) so much of the time. (At least in my house growing up.)

I think that both Francis (m) and Frances (f) are nice names (when spelled the correct way for their respective genders). However, as a matter of personal preference, Francis (for a boy) is more of a favorite of mine than Frances (for a girl).

I think Francis (m) and Frances (f) are definitely better. I just clicked on their links (which I probably should have done before I posted them, but never mind!) and I was surprised to see that it said Francis could be both male and female. I thought it was pretty set in stone that Francis was male and Frances was female! Oh well, never mind!

I knew a female Francis, who everyone at school used to call 'Francis the boy's way.' I never knew so many people were aware that Francis was a male spelling and Frances a female one!

FrancesI don't like Frances at all.
I imagine more on a boy.
I agree. I don't like "junior" names too much
I perfer the spelling Frances

I like neither Frances nor Francis, I very much dislike it for boys, because it sounds too feminine and I dislike it for girls for the opposite reason. (Strange, I know)

I like Francis for a boy and Frances for a girl, it is a family name for me, my great grandparents were Francis and Frances Rylands.
I would be more likely to use Francis / Francis for a middle name
Frances Catherine is nice but I would much prefer Catherine Frances
Francis Jack doesnt appeal to me at all I would prefer something like Johnathan Francis
Alice Rose is lovely but Alice Rosalind would be nicer
I think its lovely to have a son names after his mother

I think your great-grandparents being Francis and Frances is really neat. I wonder if that's what broke the ice for them to introduce themselves? Do you know the story of how they met?And "I think it's lovely to have a son named after his mother" also! Alexandra and Alexander, for example, greatly appeal to me.~Lillian~

Sadly I know very little about them as they died before I was born, My information comes from my Dad and men seldom ask the interesting questions of older relations
I do know they were irish catholics and were not too impressed with my Church of England Grandfather lol, but Grandmother Florence obviously was as they had eleven children

I agree with you about Francis Jack, even Francis Jonathan would have been better. I don't know why, but whilst I think Jack is fine for a first name, it seems to nicknamey to me for a middle name- how strange is that? Alice Rosalind is just beautiful!
How interesting that your great grandparents were both called Frances/ Francis! Did it ever get confusing for them? I guess that a married couple and even a mother and son would probably have different nicknames, like Frances and Frankie or Frannie and Francis. Edited to add: Sometimes I'm really thick, if they were your great grandparents you probably didn't know them that well. Sorry!

I don't care much for the name no matter what. I suppose I prefer it on a girl, because I have a hard time imagining the average guy going by Francis and I loathe the nn Frank / Frankie.

I think that if I were to actually use Frances/ Francis on a child I would probably use Frances on a girl, but when I think of men called Francis, I can only think of quite masculine people like Francis Drake. Thankyou anyway!

I like Frances and Francis, and Frankie, for girls and boys. :)I'm not a fan of parents naming their children after themselves, regardless of whether it's father/son, mother/daughter, or anything else. I especially don't like it when a man and woman have a son named for the father and a daughter named for the mother. It creeps me out, because then it's like the brother and sister are a miniature version of a married couple. :/-- Sarah

I agree with you about a mother and father naming a daughter and son after themselves. I always wonder what would happen if they had a third child... would they give it another family name or just a name that they liked? I would feel really left out if I was that third child!

I adore both Frances and Francis- I love Frances for a girl, and Francis for a boy. I don't think I'd have the nerve to use Francis, but I still like it!Alice Rose and Francis Jack- GREAT sibset!

I love Francis for boys and Frances for girls. On either sex, I love Frankie. On boys, I also like Frank, and on girls, I also like Frannie.Frances and Francis seems sweet to me. Alice and Francis sound great together--but I'm a tidge biased, because Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice, are two of my favourites in HP.Array

I hadn't even seen the Neville Longbottom connection! *smacks self in head* That makes Alice and Francis seem even better to me, although I don't think Francis went by Frank.
I have to say that although I love the nn Frankie, I really don't like Frank. I don't know why the "-ie" makes so much difference! Frannie is cute too.
