I like both, but I will pick Dawson. I know a bratty kid named Desmond.

I'm going to go with Dawson, because I can picture myself getting used to saying it aloud to address a guy. Even though I would not like it.
Desmond would never stop being annoying to say aloud, though. It sounds so snivelly to me.

Dawson. It's not a favorite by any means, but I find Desmond somewhat silly, maybe because of "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da". Desmond had a barrow in the marketplace and stayed at home and did his pretty face. (In the last verse, it's Desmond who does that, not Molly.)

Dawson is much to surname-y.

Desmond is unattractive, but I'd choose it without hesitation because Dawson is unthinkably horrid. Des is acceptable as a nn, but anyone unfortunate enough to be Dawson LN would be stuck with it.

Desmond isn't a favorite. It feels slightly pretentious, but Des feels feminine to me. But overall it just seems nicer than Dawson.
