I seem to be one of few people who sees this mainly as feminine. In my experience, most people think of "River" when you say Phoenix (even before Joaquin, who's still around and just played the Joker). But I don't know... something about the sound reminds me of Stevie Nicks, almost. It's odd.
I didn't even think of the city in Arizona until I read other comments.
Phoenix is a GP of mine. I like Phoenix, Kestrel, and Robin all as feminine names, though Robin is the most unisex for me (thanks to Robin Hood and Robin Williams).
