This is an interesting one. It's a little bit dated (a la Tiffany) but still elegant. However... all but one of the Stephanies I've ever known have... well, to put it mildly, they've had a screw loose. Especially the one who was my friend in primary school. (My confidence issues must've been obvious to everyone once I remained friends with Stephanie after she tried to push me down the stairs in first grade.) And for the one Stephanie who turned out to be okay, Stephanie turned out to be her middle name, but the one she preferred to go by.So I don't have the best associations with the name Stephanie - to the point where nowadays when I meet a Stephanie I find myself quietly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sorry.

Did we know the same Stephanie I wonder? Ours was exactly like that

Dated, but okay. I don't mind the nicknames Steph or Stevie.

I went to school, with a few. They were all nice enough girls, but the name itself doesn't excite me, at all. It's a bit bland.

I have somewhat of a negative association with this name so I'm not keen. However if I try to look past that, the name is still good to use, not dated at all and not overused.Though the possible nickname of Fanny (UK = Vagina / US = Arse) should be a consideration.

The only nickname for Stephanie that is used is Steph and less Stephy.

Not in our Stephanie's caseIt was a cruel nickname if that helps, purposely chosen to make fun of her. She went by Stef over Steph

That is horrible :(

It is. Kids can be mean. If you're a kid who doesn't line up with the "normal" then they'll choose anything no matter how silly. It's possible to raise your kids to not care about other's opinions / silly comments on names, but I'm sure that's difficult to do and would rely heavily on the child's own demeanor. Our Stef didn't care, or didn't seem to. In retrospect it's hard to tell because well... let's say shit happened. I can elaborate if you want, but I will withdraw the semi-essay for now. Despite that, I know some people take possible mean nicknames into account so I thought I should mention it

You don't need to elaborate. It is personal. You are right that kids can be cruel and I hope that she's well. ;(

Not bad, but not remarkable. I far prefer Stephen for a boy, so I'd never consider it.
