I love it so. The sound is wonderful. It has strength and history and beauty. I’m pleased to see Wordsmith call it earthy and rich.
To me it is a poetic name, because it reminds me of an extraordinary poetry teacher I had in high school. She was so elegant and strong and whip-smart.
It also has spiritual connotations to me — otherworldliness, and the great ‘other’ in general.

I really like Barbara--it's earthy and rich.

Okay, I know that I was a perpetrator myself, but I don't think I've ever seen so much hatred directed at any one name here on BtN. At least, not a name that was at one time wildly popular, not something OTT or off-the-wall or long-dead. I'm taking a leaf from Barbra's book here and starting to feel bad for all of the bearers of this name, quite a few of whom I grew up with.
Try not to take it personally, Barbara H., Barbara A., Barbara F., Barbara K., Barbara P., and Barbara G.! Plus all the Barbaras I knew who I now don't remember!

What do I think?
Okay, I think it’s ugly, plain and simple. I cannot find any redeeming qualities about it.
I recently met a little Dorothy. And I thought to myself, “yikes, what an ugly name for such a cute little girl!”
And then I thought, “ well, it could be redeemed by a cute nickname such as Dot, or Dottie, or something of the like.”
However, I cannot say the same of Barbara. It’s, like, old gravy that has gone greasy and wobbly in the pan. Just sort of yuck.

I think the name Barbara is an emphatically dated and revloting name that should have left the charts DECADES ago. I can't even envision it still being used, much less stomach it. Some dated names are tollerable but 'Barbara' just isn't one of them. It really belongs in another decade, buried and forgotten. I detest EVERYTHING about this name including all of its diminutives.
I've encounter a few pleasant 'Barbara/Barbra' throughout my life including my 6th grade teacher if my memory serves me correct but I never been sold on the name. And I simply never will.
