Not at all snobbish where I come from. I was at school with a very pleasant one who had a German ln and a sister named Bronwen. And it beats Meriadoc if you want the nn Merry!
I'm sure Pie could confirm this: in Wales it's meRIDith and male, or a ln. Not at all sure if they use it for girls there. My friend was MEridith, and another friend had the ln Meredith and pronounced it the same way. Could just be South Africans being their own sweetly insular selves ...
